According to Disneyland Resort‘s lore, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror has officially sunken into the earth…

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror opened in Disney California Adventure Park in 2004, following Walt Disney World Resort’s version at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. (Similar drop towers later opened at Disneyland Paris Resort and Tokyo Disney Resort.) But the Southern California Disney park no longer has its Hollywood Tower Hotel.

In 2017, Walt Disney Imagineers reimagined the Disneyland Resort ride to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!. Although the retheme of the ride’s exterior faced significant backlash, Disney Parks fans overwhelmingly enjoyed the reimagined attraction. It remains one of the most popular experiences in Avengers Campus.

Even though it’s been seven years since Mission: BREAKOUT! opened, one Disneyland Resort guest recently noticed remnants of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure Park. Redditor u/rosariobono recently shared this photo of a poster on the wall inside of the theme park’s Starbucks, which still features a reference to the Hollywood Tower Hotel:

Does the Hollywood Tower Hotel still exist in regards to Buena Vista Street lore?

“Did they just forget to alter the images or is the tower still there in the lore?” the Disney Park guest asked. “…With the markings around mission breakout it signifies that the Tivan collection teleported there somehow. Could that mean that the Tivan collection also replaced the Hollywood tower hotel in Buena vista street lore?”

Another Disney Parks fan, u/Red-Fire19, broke down Walt Disney Imagineering’s official explanation: “I know the current DCA park lore is that The Hollywood Tower is still there, it’s just that The Collector put his Tower over it, which sunk the Hollywood Tower into the ground.”

Of course, in real life, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! took over the Hollywood Tower Hotel building. But it’s always fun to dig into Walt Disney Imagineering’s in-universe explanations for changes at the Disney parks!
