Spider-Man is ready to swing back into action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but it isn’t Tom Holland.

These days, when one thinks of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, it’s unlikely that one particular actor comes to mind. While Tobey Maguire was for a long time synonymous with the role, having played him in the three Sam Raimi-directed films, he was quickly followed by Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man reboots.

Then, in 2016, Tom Holland took on the iconic role when the character made his debut in the MCU, first appearing in Captain America: Civil War, and then in several subsequent entries, from his own trilogy of solo films to the likes of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Between films like Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), which united Maguire, Garfield, and Holland for the first time on screen, and the 3D-animated Spider-Verse films, the world-famous wall-crawler has, in recent times, become more synonymous with the Multiverse.

But the Multiverse isn’t going anywhere. Not only is the upcoming (untitled) Spider-Man 4, which will see Tom Holland return to the role, rumored to continue exploring the far reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an upcoming animated series takes place in an alternate reality, following the likes of Marvel Studios’ Multiverse-hopping animated anthology series, What If…? (2021–2024).

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

The first trailer for the new animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, has swung onto the worldwide web. Watch it below, per Marvel Entertainment:

Per the description on Disney+, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is an animated series that follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.”

Previously titled Spider-Man: Freshman Year, the new series is officially part of the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking place in an alternate timeline within the Multiverse where Green Goblin villain Norman Osborn is Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s mentor instead of Tony Stark/Iron Man, who was portrayed in the films by Robert Downey Jr.

In the show, Peter Parker/Spider-Man is voiced by Hudson Thames, who portrayed the character in What If…?. Thames is the second Peter Parker/Spider-Man actor to have returned to the role in animation, following Jake Johnson in the Spider-Verse movies.

Interestingly, Matt Murdock/Daredevil actor Charlie Cox will also make an appearance in the show, reprising his role as the beloved Hell’s Kitchen vigilante, having last appeared on-screen with Spidey in the 2021 crossover movie. Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Daredevil villain Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, also returns.

Other cast members are Colman Domingo as Norman Osborn, Zeno Robinson as Harry Osborn, Hugh Dancy as Otto Octavius, and Kari Wahlgren as May Parker.

The animation style, which is vastly different to that of the equally striking Spider-Verse movies, pays homage to the early art style of “The Amazing Spider-Man” comic books.

The first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on January 29, 2025. It will consist of 10 episodes, forming part of Phase Five of the MCU. Season 2 is already in development.
