Disney has quietly backtracked over the opening of one iconic attraction.
Closures and refurbishments are a standard part of the theme park experience, and Disney is no exception. Every attraction undergoes periodic closures, most of which are temporary and necessary for maintenance.
However, some closures can last for months—or even years—when major updates or renovations are required, such as the rumored 2025 closure of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which will see the Frontierland roller coaster totally re-tracked.
Swiss Family Treehouse’s Refurbishment
The recent closure of the Swiss Family Treehouse was supposed to be relatively brief. It closed on November 18, 2024, with plans to reopen on December 20, 2024, just in time for the peak of Disney World’s holiday crowds.
However, December 20 arrived with no sign of the attraction reopening, leaving many wondering what’s happening with the beloved treehouse. As BlogMickey reported yesterday, scaffolding, tarps, and other equipment were still up around the treehouse when Magic Kingdom Park opened for the day.
Now, Disney has quietly updated its schedule.
With Swiss Family Treehouse’s refurbishment seemingly falling behind schedule, its reopening date has been pushed back to December 23, 2024, as per the Walt Disney World Resort website.
The Swiss Family Treehouse, located in Disney World’s Adventureland, opened in 1971 as one of the park’s original attractions.
Inspired by the 1960 Disney film Swiss Family Robinson, the treehouse offers guests a chance to explore a massive tree that has been transformed into a lavish, multi-level home. The attraction invites visitors to walk through the treehouse and discover the imaginative living spaces created by the Robinson family, complete with intricate details and scenic views of Adventureland.
The Swiss Family Treehouse features a variety of rooms, including a kitchen, lookout tower, and bedrooms, each designed to reflect the family’s resourcefulness in building their home after being shipwrecked.
The attraction is largely self-guided, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace and take in the impressive architecture, scenic views, and lush surroundings. It also serves as a great photo opportunity, with its elevated position offering a unique vantage point of the park.
Though it has remained relatively unchanged over the years, the Swiss Family Treehouse holds nostalgic value for many visitors who grew up experiencing it in the early years of Disney World. In the years following its opening, the attraction became a symbol of the park’s focus on immersive storytelling and detailed environmental design.
While it has been somewhat overshadowed by newer, more thrilling rides and attractions at Magic Kingdom Park over the years, the Swiss Family Treehouse continues to be a beloved and peaceful escape for those seeking a slower, more reflective Disney experience.
