Boar’s Head announced on Friday that it will permanently close its Virginia plant in response to a devastating listeria outbreak linked to its products. The Sarasota-based company also revealed that it will cease production of liverwurst, the product associated with the outbreak that has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals and the hospitalization of around 50 others across 18 states.

This horrifying story has gripped many across the United States, including Walt Disney World Resort, where Boar’s Head is served. Now that this closure has been announced, many are wondering how the theme parks will be affected.

Devastating Listeria Outbreak Causes Nation Wide Recall

The outbreak has raised significant concerns about food safety, leading to a major recall and intensified scrutiny of the company’s practices. Boar’s Head’s decision to shut down the Virginia facility underscores its commitment to addressing the issue and preventing further incidents.

The closure of the plant, which had been operational for many years, marks a significant shift for the company as it moves to regain consumer trust and ensure the safety of its products.

Notably, Boar’s Head products, including its liverwurst, are sold at various locations, including several at Walt Disney World. Specifically, the company’s meats are featured at Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Deli at Disney’s Palm, Magnolia, and Oak Trail Golf Courses.

Disney has yet to make a statement regarding any immediate changes to its offerings or impact on its dining locations. However, given the seriousness of the outbreak, it is expected that Disney will review its supply chain and food safety practices to ensure the continued well-being of its guests.

Food Safety Moving Foreward

In many ways, Disney is a pioneer in food safety. Guests can receive special dietary guidance for all kinds of allergies and food sensitivities, something that many other theme parks have not yet adopted.

If you have questions about the food at a specific restaurant, guests are advised to contact the cast members who handle questions regarding special diets by emailing special.diets@disneyworld.com. Another option would be to check the specific menus of each restaurant by visiting the individual pages on Walt Disney World Resort’s website.

The listeria outbreak has put a spotlight on food safety protocols across the industry, prompting both consumers and companies to be more vigilant. As Boar’s Head halts production of liverwurst and closes the affected plant, the company is likely to face increased regulatory scrutiny and consumer concern moving forward.
