Last week, Alex Hirsch practically broke the internet as The Book of Bill kicked a hornet nest of conspiracy into the fandom as a mysterious website and countdown clock teased the long-awaited Gravity Falls season three. However, a broken countdown clock and a series of broken codes and ciphers left more questions than answers.

If you’re a bit lost in the lore, Gravity Falls tells the story of Dipper and Mabel Pines spending a summer with their eccentric Grunkle Stan in the mysterious town of Gravity Falls, where they uncover supernatural secrets while running his tourist trap, the Mystery Shack.

Along with paranormal and supernatural creatures like zombies, ghosts, and devious psychics, the Pines family battles the delightfully devious Bill Cipher, an interdimensional entity that has toyed with the fandom for years.

Last night, fans accessing the page found an interactive screen depicting some hidden room of the Mystery Shack with an antique computer monitor where they can enter passwords to create different responses. At first, this looks like a publicity stunt to generate fan interest and hurl a few easter eggs their way, but when has Hirsch ever done anything that simple?

Fans can use a growing list of passwords (found here) to uncover the various secrets throughout the mysterious tableau, but there has yet to be a coherent answer from the creator or the fandom. Even so, the reveal is rich in content that only further teases the audience.

Tidbits and clues left by the show’s eccentric cast, including Dipper, Mabel, and Soos, and even special guest appearances by MatPat and Weird Al Yankovic, can all be discovered if fans type the right prompt into the computer’s search bar. Surely this isn’t all just an elaborate game.

Similar to how the hidden codes in the Book of Bill and the messages left by Soos on the site’s error screen led fans on a virtual scavenger hunt that blended mediums and sources, it feels like the fandom is being set up either for something massive or an elaborate hoax only Bill Cipher could devise.

It remains to be seen whether we’re being punked by a Disney Channel villain or toyed with to hype up a third season or feature film reveal, but this isn’t going unnoticed by any means. The stunt has simply gone on for too long to just be called a joke.

What’s Really Going On?

Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch has been “in conversations” with Disney about returning to the series for some time now, and this certainly feels like a step towards a new project. The book, the countdown clock, the website, and the interactive scene all took time, money, and effort to bring to life, meaning that something worth the hype should be on its way.

In this writer’s opinion, the realistic designs of the scene set by the webpage and the mixing of real-world people, objects, and events could point to a live-action adaptation of the fan-favorite series. It would certainly follow Disney’s pattern of live-action remakes and similar adaptations, and who’s to say Bill wouldn’t be all for it?

Whatever it is, fans won’t bide their time sorting through clues, codes, and creepy messages forever, and something will eventually have to give. Be it a third season, an animated series told from Bill’s point of view, or a live-action cinematic masterpiece, it will be a massive win for Disney.
