Who’s the Next Big Marvel Bad Guy?

Since the defeat of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (2o19), Marvel Studios has struggled to find a new Big Bad who could fill his big purple boots. Phase Four of the MCU, which included movies like Black Widow (2021), Eternals (2021), and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), failed to generate a villain who could sustain audience interest.

It is very telling that the most successful movie of that period, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), had to enlist a whole cadre of previous franchise bad guys in order to crack a billion at the box office.

Kevin Feige’s plan for the next big MCU storyline, the Multiverse Saga, hinged on the introduction of Kang the Conqueror, a cross-dimensional threat to be portrayed in multiple Variants by Jonathan Majors. After introductions in the Disney+ series Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), it appeared that Marvel was committed to Kang.

That all went out the window when Jonathan Majors was arrested and charged with assault, strangulation, and harassment against a former domestic partner. The actor was convicted of third-degree reckless assault and harassment and ordered to attend a year-long domestic violence intervention program. Disney has fired Majors from his MCU role, and Marvel Studios is reportedly looking to recast the villain for the upcoming Avengers 5, formerly Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

‘Breaking Bad’ to the MCU

After months of speculation, iconic Breaking Bad actor Giancarlo Esposito has confirmed that he will debut in the MCU in an upcoming film.

Giancarlo Esposito is one of Hollywood’s busiest character actors, currently starring in the Amazon Prime Video series The Boys, Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian, Netflix’s The Gentlemen, and the upcoming mystery series The Residence.

Although many audiences will be most familiar with Esposito as the terrifyingly polite drug kingpin Gus Fring from the acclaimed AMC series Breaking Bad (and the prequel series Better Call Saul), he also has an expansive film career with credits in movies like Do the Right Thing (1989), Malcolm X (1992), The Usual Suspects (1995), Ali (2001), and Okja (2017).

It seems his resume will soon include the MCU. At the recent Phoenix Fan Fusion (via @LegionofSand), Giancarlo Esposito confirmed his upcoming Marvel role, saying, “The MCU has knocked on my door, and it’s a role you won’t predict. It will be teased, and there will be a series afterwards.”

Inside the Magic recently reported on fan enthusiasm for Giancarlo Esposito to be cast as an older version of Kang the Conqueror, but that is not the only role that fans have been pushing for. Esposito has been fan-cast as Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom, a new version of Professor X/Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men reboot (though he seems to have an unreasonable prerequisite for that role), and Norman Osborn/the Green Goblin.

Giancarlo Esposito did not give any more details as to what movie he may make his Marvel debut in, though it could be as soon as this summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine or next year’s The Fantastic Four or Captain America: Brave New World. But, regardless of the role he may have signed on for, the Marvel Cinematic Universe can definitely use a good villain right now.
