Hollywood icon Harrison Ford will soon make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Brave New World (2025) as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, replacing the late William Hurt. It is pretty much confirmed that Ford will undergo a transformation akin to Bruce Banner’s in the Captain America movie, and recently, a leak has made its way online, revealing what that transformation looks like.

Captain America: Brave New World (formerly Captain America: New World Order) was announced three years ago following the climax of Marvel Studios’ second Disney+ show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan as the titular duo, Malcolm Spellman’s series followed Sam Wilson’s (Mackie) journey to leave his Falcon persona behind and become the new Captain America. This was set in motion back in 2019 when an aging Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) handed over his shield and mantle at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

There have been many reports regarding the development and troubled production of Captain America: Brave New World, but a first look at the movie at CinemaCon earlier this month saw intrigue reignited. In the clip, Sam Wilson attends the White House to meet the new President of the United States–Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross. After jokingly referencing the cast change, Ross asks Sam to rebuild the Avengers. The sequence also revealed the return of Carl Lumbly’s Isaiah Bradley, who goes berserk Winter Soldier-style after hearing loud music. In terms of a Winter Soldier everyone loves, Sebastian Stan won’t return as Bucky Barnes in Julius Onah’s new movie, as confirmed by Mackie himself in early 2024.

The title may suggest this is a Captain America movie, but the casting reveals otherwise. Both Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson will reprise their roles as Betty Ross and Samuel Sterns/Leader, respectively. The pair first appeared in the MCU’s inaugural year, starring alongside Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk (2008). And as rumors flare that Red Hulk will appear in the film, thanks to certain merchandise reveals and comic book history, it seems Brave New World will really be a clash of titans.
A recent leak has confirmed that Red Hulk will appear in the movie and will most likely be played by Star Wars and Indiana Jones legend Harrison Ford. Cosmic Marvel (@cosmic_marvel) shared an image of upcoming Happy Meal toys on X (formerly Twitter), which included first looks at Red Hulk, Ruth/Sabra, and Falcon.

It will be interesting to see how this first look in toy form translates to a blockbuster live-action experience. But we may already know how Captain America: Brave New World will end, considering Harrison Ford is tapped to appear as Thunderbolt Ross in the film directly after. Thunderbolts* (2025) will mark the end of Marvel’s turbulent Phase Five, and as Kevin Feige revealed at CinemaCon, the asterisk is part of the official title, and no further comment will be made until after the film’s release.
It is looking more and more likely that the Thunderbolts will be somehow connected to the future of the Avengers squad now that legacy members like Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) are out. Could Sam Wilson’s answer to rebuilding the Avengers be with the likes of Yelena Belova/Black Widow (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), and John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell)? As 2025 nears, the chances that Thunderbolts* will be a direct continuation of Brave New World are increasing. They may lead to a catastrophic conclusion to Phase Five before The Fantastic Four (2025) takes audiences to a new universe in the Multiverse Saga.
