The Spider-Man franchise is filled with a ton of memorable moments and scenes. That being said, the most iconic scene was one of the worst to film.

One of the great things about Spider-Man is that there are so many ways to enjoy the character. You can watch the incredible Spider-Verse movies following Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, the Amazing films with Andrew Garfield, or the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe version with Tom Holland.

Many will argue that the best Spider-Man movies were the original trilogy starring Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker), Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane Parker), and James Franco (Harry Osborne). These movies feature moments that will be remembered forever like Peter stopping the train or the upside-down kiss in the rain. However, that kiss was not as great for the actors as it was for the audience.

While promoting her new film Civil War (2024) on The Jonathan Ross Show, Kirsten Dunst opened up about the famous kiss she shared with Tobey Maguire in the first film. While it was magical for audiences, it was a nightmare for Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson.

“I remember Sam Raimi giving me a book of famous kisses to be inspired but also he really wanted to make it special even though it was kind of miserable actually doing it… It was pouring with rain, freezing; Tobey [Maguire] couldn’t breathe so it was almost like I was resuscitating him.”

This echoed the sentiment of Peter Parker himself, who told Entertainment Tonight a similar story back in 2002.

“I couldn’t breathe. Rain was pouring up my nose and then she was kissing me. I couldn’t breathe out of my mouth and I had to hold my breath while I was kissing her. The conditions weren’t as sexy and sweet and romantic as it came off.”

Hopefully, both of them look back and think all the hassle was worth it because Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire arguably had the most iconic kiss of all time.
