It would be a glorious understatement to say that Star Wars fans lost their collective minds when Lucasfilm darling Dave Filoni took the reigns as Chief Creative Officer just days ago. Now that the mastermind behind Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, Rebels, Ahsoka, and more controls the galaxy far, far away, what does this mean for the franchise?

It’s safe to say that Filoni’s involvement with the Star Wars universe has revitalized interest in a nearly 50-year-old franchise to a tremendous extent, but he’s done far more than just create spinoffs and animated series. Filoni has practically created his own sector of the galaxy that has grown in both size and popularity to rival that of George Lucas’s original trilogy.

The best question any creative individual can be asked is, “What comes next?” Filoni has more than a few toys to play with now that he’s CCO. Although much has been said about Jon Favreau and his contributions or  Taika Waititi’s plans to rule the galaxy, die-hard fans are likely much more interested in what the man behind Mando could do.

Star Wars fans are some of the most loyal and vocal superfans, but they can also be some of the most divisive and toxic. While it’s true that it’s impossible to please everyone, Filoni is a creator who has been more or less consistent with his fan following. In short, he’s practically made something for everyone.

From the animated worlds of Star Wars: Clone Wars, Rebels, and Resistance to live-action spinoffs like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, Filoni’s slice of Star Wars covers a wide variety of genres and mediums that suit fans of all ages. It’s this dedication to a vast audience that keeps his work relevant even after the credits roll.

Thus far, Filoni has primarily been involved with various series on Disney+. Given his reputation and reception from most of the fanbase, a full-length feature film is only the next logical step for his impressive career.

While the director has cut his teeth on Lucasfilm Animation projects like Clone Wars and The Bad Batcha full-length feature film or even an entirely new trilogy is not out of the question by any means. The ball is in Filoni’s court, but the pieces are there for a whole new series, with or without characters we already know and love.

At the time of writing, this is all pure speculation. However, Filoni’s recent work with Ahsoka Tano and Grand Admiral Thrawn has led some to suspect that he might adapt Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire, but that’s not the only venue a series from Filoni could go.

Dave Filoni has proven time and time again that while Jedi Knights and Sith Lords are nice to have around, he doesn’t need them to tell an unforgettable Star Wars story. Everything from the Mandalorians to the Night Sisters is up for grabs, thanks to Filoni’s contributions to the extended universe.

While there has been no true announcement from the man himself, a major development is all but inevitable. Given the filmmaker’s portfolio of hit after hit, whatever he chooses will be certified Star Wars gold.
