Marvel and the MCU have given several of our favorite characters a new lease on life. Comic books and movies are two different species of media, but it’s amazing what they can do when their powers combine. While characters like Captain America and Iron Man have only improved with a few cinematic upgrades, some have truly gone from rags to riches.

It’s been said that Marvel has the best heroes and DC has the best villains, but we’ve recently seen an absolute renaissance for madmen in the MCU and more, especially with the introduction of the Spider-Verse from Sony Animation.
The Spot: Marvel’s Multiversal Madman

If you’ve seen Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, you’re likely already asking just who the Spot is. What starts out as a goofy, bumbling, and somewhat annoying petty crook in the first stages of the film soon evolves into one of the biggest threats Spidey has faced since Willem DaFoe returned to his role as the Green Goblin in No Way Home. However, only comic fans know just how much of an evolution of the character is for the franchise.

While he might be a new face for the cinematic variant of our favorite wall-crawler, Spidey has been putting the Spot in his place since 1985. Although his origins, personality, and powers go largely unchanged, Marvel has upped the ante in this new rendition.

Warning! Mild spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Dr. Jonathan Ohn is still a scientist turned supervillain, although the bagel incident was a new addition, but the extent of his portal powers has greatly been improved since he first went toe-to-toe with Peter Parker. Going from one of Kingpin’s lackeys to a dimension-hopping mastermind, the Spot has definitely seen some upgrades. As a result, Marvel has essentially reinvented the character, taking a gag villain of the week and turned him into one of the biggest threats to the Marvel Multiverse.

For context, this is the same character who was on a team known as “The Legion of Losers.” Fighting alongside villains like the Baboon and Kangaroo isn’t exactly the best way to make a name for yourself in Marvel’s Rogues Gallery. Despite having one of the most dangerous set of powers, the Spot was basically a joke until Sony reimagined him for the Spider-Verse series.
The Spot has gone from being able to conjure holes and portals in physical space to ripping the fabric of the multiverse to sate his needs. Not since Far From Home’s Mysterio have audiences seen such a leap in character development from a Marvel villain, and we can only expect him to get even more dangerous with the next installment.
