According to reports, The Walt Disney Company released its domestic preview figures for Marvel Studio’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) Thursday. The third iteration of the beloved MCU franchise is off to a solid start.

Moviegoers on Thursday evening seemed to head out in droves to theaters to get their first look at the final chapter in possibly the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most popular heroes. This morning, Variety reported that on Thursday, Marvel Studio’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 earned $17.5 million in domestic box office previews. It is now on track to bring in as much as $120 million in its opening weekend. The film collected $35 million in box office dollars on Thursday throughout the 47 international markets.
The film, which James Gunn directs, is the latest release from The Walt Disney Company and should overtake Universal and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) as this weekend’s biggest winner in total box office proceeds.
Compared to its past films within the franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) had $11.2 million in Thursday previews and had a total of $94 million back in its opening weekend. The second installment of the franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), received $17 million in Thursday previews and ended with $146 million opening weekend.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been released during a critical time for Marvel Studios. The MCU is coming off a disastrous disappointment with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), a significant blow for theaters. The third film for the Ant-Man franchise only gained $500 million at the box office worldwide and was expected to do better.
Guardians currently has a Rotten Tomatoes audience ranking of 96% and a Tomatometer of 80% and should perform nicely in theaters.
