Marvel fans cannot get enough of Logan (Wolverine) and Wade Wilson (Deadpool) together. And that is for more reasons than the on-screen chemistry of Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds and their hilarious off-screen “feud.” The two characters have had a similar love-hate relationship for years, and Marvel just announced they are getting back together this year.
Marvel Comics has recently announced that the two survivors of the Weapon X Program will have to work together in new series this April. The new Destiny of X era will kick off with the upcoming X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine miniseries by Benjamin Percy and Adam Kubert.
The new series finds the future of all the X-Men in danger, and Deadpool will step up to help his long-time friends. The King of Monsters on Staten Island has uncovered a sinister plot to take down mutant-kind.
Benjamin Percy and Adam Kubert spoke to Marvel about their new series, saying:
“For ten weeks, the X LIVES OF WOLVERINE/X DEATHS OF WOLVERINE will take readers on an epic, time-shredding adventure that sets up the next era of the mutant books: Destiny of X. How do you follow up something like that? You keep raising the bar higher. Readers will not only experience a non-stop thrill ride, starting in April, but a kickoff story that is as irreverent and hilarious as it is heart-bruised. We’ve been teasing Deadpool for some time now, and he’s bullying his way into the pages of Wolverine for a wild (and reluctant) team-up that feels like some cousin to Midnight Run and The Fugitive. Get ready for more Maverick mayhem, more CIA spycraft, and more DANGER (yes, you read that right) at every turn.”
They have been teasing Deadpool in the current run of Wolverine for a while so it’s about time for it to pay off. And Marvel fans are ready to see more the friends/enemies.
More on Wolverine and Deadpool’s Relationship
Deadpool AKA the Merc with a Mouth has been a thorn in Logan’s side not long after debuting in The New Mutants #98 (1991) by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza. They have had their ups and downs – including multiple murder attempts by the two essentially immortal characters. But they have come to an understanding and managed to work together as part of X-Force for a while.
Yet, they have not appeared in a Marvel movie together except in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), wildly considered one of the worst ever made. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has confirmed Deadpool 3 is in the works with Bob’s Burgers’ Molyneux sisters, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, set to write an R-rated script.
But the movie has seemingly been delayed as Ryan Reynolds takes a sabbatical from acting and Marvel shifted much of their Phase Four release dates. Wolverine’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has not been revealed yet.
That’s why fans have been begging for Hugh Jackman to reprise his role as Wolverine one more time, even though the actor said he was done after Logan (2017). That film was the final success of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise and was their take on the Old Man Logan comic book.
Wolverine and Deadpool have been on the rocks in recent Marvel Comics. Mutants like Wolverine, Scott Summers (Cyclops), and Jean Grey have been living in their own private country – Krakoa. Despite the fact that Wade Wilson has been a close ally of the X-Men for years and served on X-Men teams like the Uncanny X-Force, he has been barred from entering Krakoa as he is a mutate and not technically a mutant as he does not have the X-Gene.
Luckily, Deadpool is forgiving and will help The Best There Is save all the mutants of Krakoa.
Let us know in the comments if you will be picking up Wolverine #20 when it hits shelves on April 20th.
