Marvel Studios’ Eternals will not hit theaters until November 5, but the newest superhero film is already generating a ton of buzz — from the introduction of a deaf superhero to rumors of one heck of a post-credits scene. Eternals has a number of big names in its cast, including Angelina Jolie, Game of Thrones stars Richard Madden and Kit Harrington, and Silicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani.
Eternals will also bring Mexican-American actress Salma Hayek into the Marvel fold. Hayek will be playing the role of Ajak — a healer who leads the Eternals, all of whom were created when the Celestials began experimenting on humans thousands of years ago. In the original comics, Ajak was a man, but Marvel decided to change the superhero’s gender and Hayek was cast in the role.
Actors always want to bring their characters to life in their own way, and sometimes that can be different from the vision that the director has for the character, which can cause some friction. Hayek recently admitted that such differences caused her and Eternals director Chloé Zhao to get into a fight that escalated to screaming so loud that Hayek’s neighbors could hear.
Hayek spoke about the film, and her fight with Zhao, in an interview with Elle magazine:
I had some problems with the script and we got into a serious fight at my house. We were both passionate. And she was like, “No, but that’s not how I designed it.” The people outside my house were calling it a fight, because we were kind of screaming. We continued to talk and talk, and it went on for a long time. The people outside were so nervous that I was going to get fired. I came out and I said, “Wow, I’m in love with her brain!” That was the best creative conversation I’ve ever had with a director in my life, and she felt the same. She told me, “Wow! That was amazing.” It was just complete freedom. We found our middle ground. While finding it, we came up with other ideas. It was super exciting.
It seems that the fight is far behind them and, at a recent press conference, Hayek heaped praise on Zhao, calling her “one of the best directors in the world”.
