Walt Disney World is making several changes to its theme parks — Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom — in preparation for the 50th anniversary, which will kick off on October 1, 2021.

One of the construction projects we have been following along with is the update happening within Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom.

In case you haven’t been following along, the iconic gear-themed pavement is being ripped up and replaced with a smoother, dark pavement. Now, as Imagineers have been continuously working hard on this aspect of the theme park, we can see more of the dark pavement installed throughout Tomorrowland.

Bioreconstruct took to Twitter to share a handful of photos showing the updated pavement work in Tomorrowland:

Newest work in the Tomorrowland walkway replacement is the center pavement is now almost as dark as asphalt. This use of color has a remarkable effect on walking! It feels like you are being propelled or drawn into Tomorrowland.

Another Tweet within this thread shows more of the dark pavement, which bioreconstruct compares to asphalt:

Section of the new Tomorrowland walkway showing recently cast grey concrete, and new color that seems almost as dark as asphalt.

Though, as bioreconstruct points out, some areas continue to have the gear-themed pavement — especially near Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin:

Tomorrowland is not the only section to receive an update ahead of the 50th anniversary. In fact, Disney Imagineers also completed work on attractions including Prince Charming Regal Carrousel, Peter Pan’s Flight, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, and others, so they are in tip-top shape for the 50th.

And we can’t forget about the Tangled area of Magic Kingdom and how it recently received some tender loving care as well, which you can read more about here.

It seems as though this construction is moving at a fast pace so we suspect the pavement in Tomorrowland to be fully replaced in time for Disney World’s 50th anniversary, which starts on October 1, 2021.
