Even though it won’t hit theaters and Disney+ until July 9, there is a lot of talk going around about Marvel’s newest superhero film, Black Widow. The film will star Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow in the role she originated in 2010’s Iron Man 2. The film will also star David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova.

Although Natasha calls Alexei, Melina, and Yelena her family, biologically speaking, that is not the case. Melina is also a Black Widow and all Widows are sterile, so a biological relation to Natasha is highly unlikely. Yelena and Natasha are also not biologically related but have both been through Red Room training, and therefore share that bond.

Even though the movie will be a prequel film — due to the fact that Natasha sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame (2019) — don’t think that this will be the last you see of Black Widow.

Black Widow director Cate Shortland sat down with Radio Times and said that she would love to see more of Natasha’s story, just not with Johansson.

“I think following a different character, yes,” Shortland told RadioTimes.com when asked if another film or follow-up was possible…I think Scarlett is really happy that she’s leaving the party, you know, and she’s not the last to leave. She decided she wanted to go. And I don’t think she would want to come back at the moment.”

Even though the focus of this film — and most likely future films — would be about another female assassin taking over the role of Black Widow, there is one person who Shortland would also like to see more of in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That character is the one played by David Harbour, Nastasha’s father, Alexei Shostakov AKA Red Guardian.

“Though I think Alexi has so much charisma and is so funny… and he has declared he wants a battle with Captain America. But I think he would poo his pants,” she laughed. “So I don’t know if I want to watch that. We’ll put him in a diaper.”

Another story we could see develop is that of Yelena Belova. Florence Pugh’s character made a huge splash in the trailer, and she has her own story to tell when it comes to her Red Room training. In Marvel Comics, Yelena and Natasha have a contentious relationship that often leads to conflict, and that story, or a Yelena solo story, would make an amazing film.

Black Widow will bring viewers into the heart of the story of Natasha Romanoff and how she became the kick-butt superhero viewers know and love. According to Disney:

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow will premiere simultaneously on Disney+ and in theaters on July 9.
