We recently reported on a new Congressional bill, the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act, which would allow cruise operators — including Disney Cruise Line — to bypass the current Canadian cruising ban, visiting Alaska by way of Seattle without making port in Canada.

Last week, the bill, which was introduced by Alaskan Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, passed in the United States Senate. Now, it has also passed on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill is now expected to be signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Both Senators expressed their excitement on their official social media channels. Senator Murkowski posted a video with the caption:

Big news for Alaska! My legislation, the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act—which provides a temporary fix to grant cruise ships the opportunity to travel between the states of Washington and Alaska—will now head to the President’s desk to be signed into law.

Meanwhile, Senator Sullivan wrote:

The Alaska Tourism Restoration Act—allowing cruise ships to sail to AK—is on its way to @POTUS. Thx to my colleagues for helping Alaskans in need—small business owners who were on the brink or ruin. To America: Alaska is open! The time is now for the experience of a lifetime.

At this time, Disney has not officially canceled its 2021 Alaska cruise season on the Disney Wonder ship, but the cruise operator is not currently allowing passengers to book new staterooms. This is likely due to both Canada’s cruise restrictions — which are in place until at least February 28, 2022 — and the fact that Disney has not yet set a domestic return-to-sailing date.

Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek expressed hope that domestic cruises on the Disney Dream, the Disney Fantasy, the Disney Magic, and the Disney Wonder will return by fall 2021, but this has not been confirmed. Cruises on all four of the cruise ships in Disney Cruise Line’s existing fleet have been canceled through at least July 2021.

The Alaskan cruise season runs from May through September.

It is important to remember that Disney Cruise Line must adhere to not only The Walt Disney Company’s COVID-19 regulations but to all of the restrictions set forth in the CDC’s Conditional Sailing Order (CSO).

Disney is, however, planning a major return to the water in 2022 with the maiden voyage of the newest Disney ship, the Disney Wish, slated for June 2022. The luxury liner will sail out of Port Canaveral and will feature a Frozen dinner experience, the Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge, and much more.
