Amber Heard has been embroiled in an ongoing legal battle with her ex-husband, actor Johnny Depp, for some time now. Despite the tumultuous events of the past five years, Heard is continuing her movie actress career, reprising her role as Mera in the upcoming, Aquaman 2 (2022).
There have been rumors of the actress being fired from the second Aquaman movie, but none of these reports have been confirmed and, at this time, it seems her feet are still firmly planted in the DC Extended Universe.
Now, Amber Heard is reportedly angling for a role in another popular franchise.
The DC Extended Universe has brought many memorable DC comic book legends to the big screen. From Henry Cavill as Kal-El / Superman, to Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman, to Jason Momoa as Aquaman, the popular franchise has given big Hollywood stars the chance to shine as these well-known characters. Helmed by Warner Bros., the DC Universe also produced the record-breaking Wonder Woman (2017) starring Fast & Furious (2009–) actress, Gal Gadot.
Despite its big names, the DC franchise has had a muddled history. The huge crossover event Justice League (2017) switched directors mid-production, with Joss Whedon taking over from Zack Snyder. The latter then released his four-hour directors cut — Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) — this year. As a supporting role in Justice League, Heard’s Mera had more of a starring part in 2018’s Aquaman — appearing alongside Momoa’s titular hero, as well as, Nicole Kidman (Atlanna), Willem Dafoe (Vulko) and Patrick Wilson (King Orm).
Even though Heard is appearing in the sequel, according to this new report, her sights are also set on Warner Bros. biggest franchise, the Harry Potter Universe.
Debuting in 1997, JK Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books became a worldwide phenomenon spawning a slew of blockbuster movies, a spin-off film series — Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (2016–) — and an early in development Harry Potter television series in the works at HBO Max. The report claims that now that Heard’s ex-husband has been let go from his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 — which sees Mads Mikkelsen take the reins of the evil wizard –, Heard wants to step into the Wizarding World.
While the report doesn’t say what type of role Heard is angling for, there is plenty of room in the Harry Potter Universe if the Justice League actress does want to partake in the magic. The Fantastic Beasts film series was confirmed back in 2016 that it would comprise of five films, meaning there’s still a possibility Heard could make an appearance in the sequels. Or, the Harry Potter television series could be where Heard is headed. Her recent television credit as Nadine Cross in The Stand could suggest her wanting to continue in the streaming world.
If the reports prove to be true, it will be interesting to see what type of role Heard picks up. Keep in mind, neither Heard or Warner Bros. have confirmed these rumors.
What’s happening with Amber Heard and Johnny Depp?
The Amber Heard and Johnny Depp court case has been one of the most publicized legal battles in recent times. The couple met on the set of The Rum Diary (2011) before marrying in 2015. Their marriage was short-lived, ending in 2017 amidst an onslaught of controversy during their divorce settlement. Heard claimed her relationship with Depp had been filled with many instances of domestic violence.
In 2018, the Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) actor took a libel case against the UK Newspaper, The Sun, after the publication called him a ‘wife beater’, before also suing his ex-wife for defamation in 2019. Depp revealed in the trial that he had lost a sum of up to $650 million — most of his Pirates earnings — since his earlier days as Jack Sparrow.
The court ruled against Depp in 2020, citing that Heard’s domestic abuse claims were substantially true — his subsequent appeal in March 2021 failed to overrule the verdict, meaning he’s likely out of his role as Jack Sparrow in the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It is worth noting that ex-wife Vanessa Paradis and Edward Scissorhands (1990) co-star, Winona Ryder, both came to Johnny Depp’s defence during the court trial hearing of Heard’s allegations.
