The private rail company Brightline (Virgin Trains, USA) announced that they plan to complete the extension to the Walt Disney World Resort in less than three years.
The Orlando Business Journal reports that “the Miami-based intercity rail provider in its November monthly ridership report said it wants to start revenue service on the connection during the second half of 2023.”
“The station at Disney Springs will provide a fast, convenient and enjoyable alternative to driving or flying for the millions of trips made by guests traveling between South Florida and Orlando to visit the Walt Disney World Resort each year,” the company wrote. “As part of a future planned extension to Tampa, the station at Disney Springs could also serve the millions of annual visitors to Disney and Orlando originating from the Tampa area.”
“We’re excited to work with Brightline as they pursue the potential development of a train station at Walt Disney World Resort, a project that would support our local economy and offer a bold, forward-looking transportation solution for our community and guests,” Jeff Vahle, President of Walt Disney World Resort, said in a prepared statement on the partnership.
While Disney Springs is the chosen general location of the Brightline train station at Disney World, the exact area where the station will be located has yet to be announced. The timeline for the station’s completion is contingent upon “right of way acquisition, permitting, final design and engineering.” Brightline must first also complete its ongoing extension from West Palm Beach to Orlando International Airport (MCO) and that project set to be complete by 2022.
Once complete, Brightline will be a fast and cost-effective way to connect Disney Guests with other popular areas of South Florida like Miami Beach and cruise terminals. The high-speed rail line will also free Guests from only having to fly into MCO. Now, travelers will be able to fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale and still have a quick and easy transfer to Walt Disney World.
The 2022 MCO completion date will also help Guests combine their Disney World Vacation with a Disney Cruise out of Port Canaveral or Miami, as 2022 sailing itineraries are already available for booking!
