OpEd: Why I Have No Problem Wearing a Mask to Disney

The ongoing pandemic has impacted the lives of people worldwide. With COVID-19 case numbers continuing to rise in the U.S., companies like Disney are requiring Guests to wear face masks when visiting their properties. And while face masks have been a point of contention for people all across the country, I personally don’t have a problem with wearing them.

In my opinion, wearing a face mask is a small act of kindness — a very simple thing I can do to help others around me, and even myself. And if I am making the choice to visit a Disney property — where face masks are required — then I will not complain about having to wear a mask. Here’s why I don’t mind — and even love — wearing a face mask on Disney property.

Note: All Disney Parks in the U.S. — including Disneyland and Disney World — currently require Guests two and older to wear appropriate face coverings. Masks Help Slow the Spread of the Virus

For several months, it has been stated by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) — as well as doctors, scientists, epidemiologists, and more — that wearing masks helps slow the spread of COVID-19. The CDC has an entire webpage devoted to explaining how people can protect themselves from this virus, and one section shares the importance of wearing a face mask. You can find more information here.

Additionally, a study last updated this month shows the science and efficacy of the community use of face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The results indicate that face masks not only protect those around us; they protect us, as well.

It seems to me that masks are enforced at Disney Parks because The Walt Disney Company believes in their efficacy. Disney wants to operate their parks, resorts, and properties safely, so they are requiring Guests to wear appropriate face coverings the right way. Disney has even won awards for their pandemic protocol — and part of that protocol is requiring and enforcing the use of face masks.

Disney Parks are the most magical places on Earth, the places where dreams come true. As Southern California resident and a Disneyland local, when I visit Downtown Disney and Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure, I want to be as safe as possible. And to me, that means caring about the health of Cast Members, my fellow Disney Guests, and myself — and wearing my mask.

Masks Are the Easiest Way to Show Kindness

“Have courage and be kind. For where there is kindness there is goodness, and where there is goodness there is magic.” – Cinderella

Simply put, I believe that wearing a mask is the easiest way I can show kindness. To me, wearing a mask means that I believe not only in science but also in protecting those around me. Due to the nature of this virus, I may not always know whether or not I am infected, but I always care about other people. By wearing a mask, I can show others that I want them to be safe, too.

And, to me, kindness is truly a quality of The Walt Disney Company. What could be more “Disney” than being kind? If wearing a mask is my way of being nice to others, then that feels magical. As stated in the quote above from Disney’s live-action Cinderella, “Where there is kindness there is goodness, and where there is goodness there is magic.” I am doing good by wearing my mask, and that surely is magical.

As a Bonus, Masks Are a Fashion Statement

While it is not the primary benefit of wearing a mask, it is definitely a bonus. Masks (and especially Disney face masks)  are most certainly a fashion statement!

As we’ve shared before on Inside the Magic, one of the most fashionable accessories that has come out of this pandemic is the face mask. Face masks come in so many designs — and since Disney is requiring Guests of Disneyland Resort (including Downtown Disney) and Walt Disney World Resort to wear face masks, they have continued to release new designs. Approved yet fashionable masks are in such high demand these days, showing that so many of us love wearing face coverings that fit our personal style. Just like how I have a favorite Disney Park, I have a favorite Disney face mask!

And, since they’re a fashion statement, they can look great in photos. Yes, you can get great vacation photos, even while wearing a mask!  They make great accessories and can add a magical touch to any Disney Parks outfit.

In short, I love wearing a face mask. I believe it shows everyone around me that I want to stop the spread of COVID-19. And, as a Disneyland Resort local, I wear my mask with pride every time I set foot on Disney property. If you also visit anytime during the pandemic, I hope you wear your mask with pride, too.
