If you are like all of us at Inside The Magic, you are likely getting your spook on this Halloween season. One of the best ways to get into the Halloween spirit if through the 1993 cult-classic film, Hocus Pocus. If watching the Sanderson Sisters–Winifred (Bette Midler) Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy)–try to suck the life out of the children of Salem doesn’t scream ‘BOO!’ to you, I am not sure what will!

But that also means that you have been dying for a sequel, and a new release from Disney Books appears to hint yet again at the possibility of a second film!
What do we know
In March Disney officially announced a director for a sequel to Hocus Pocus! Adam Shankman (who directed Hairspray) has been given the task to direct the upcoming film. Since then, we have not heard much as to what the plot of the film would be, or if the Sanderson Sisters would come back from dust. We do know that original Hocus Pocus writer Mick Garris said:
“I’m excited about it, but I really think the main reason the movie worked was the Sanderson Sisters, those actresses in those roles, those performances, that I think is the key to that movie’s long life. It was only modestly successful when it came out, at best. And I think they are the reasons that it’s still around since it came out in 1993. And I would love to see them return in it. I think that’s the plan, but I don’t know. I heard that that is what’s happening, and I believe it’s going to be for Disney+, but I’m not involved in it, which is fine. You don’t always want to revisit all of the touchstones of your past.”
Sarah Jessica Parker also has discussed how all 3 sisters would love to return for a sequel:
“I think now we’ve gotten to the point where we all, like, agreed publicly to the right people, [saying], ‘Yes! That would be a very, very fun idea. So, we’ll see. We’ll see what the future holds.”
Possible Plotline
Well, I think we need to form a calming circle because Disney just dropped a written book of the original film with an all-new sequel attached! DisneyBooks took to Instagram to say:

About the Book:Hocus Pocus is beloved by Halloween enthusiasts all over the world. Diving once more into the world of witches, this electrifying two-part young adult novel, released on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the 1993 film, marks a new era of Hocus Pocus. Fans will be spellbound by a fresh retelling of the original film, followed by the all-new sequel that continues the story with the next generation of Salem teens.
Shortly after moving from California to Salem, Massachusetts, Max Dennison finds himself in hot water when he accidentally releases a coven of witches, the Sanderson sisters, from the afterlife. Max, his sister, and his new friends (human and otherwise) must find a way to stop the witches from carrying out their evil plan and remaining on Earth to torment Salem for all eternity.
Twenty-five years later, Max and Allison’s seventeen-year-old daughter, Poppy, finds herself face-to-face with the Sanderson sisters in all their sinister glory. When Halloween celebrations don’t quite go as planned, it’s a race against time as Poppy and her friends fight to save her family and all of Salem from the witches’ latest vile scheme.
Disney has yet to confirm if the Hocus Pocus sequel will follow the book’s adaptation of life in Salem after the Sanderson Sisters are gone, but considering they put out an official continuation of the story, we would not be surprised if this plot finds itself in the future film.
Plus, Max and Allison getting married is what we all wanted to see, and by using this plot idea, all of the original characters can return. Max and Allison would have aged with the first film and are now parents, plus the sisters may look a little older, but they also need to come back from the dead so that can explain the aging process.
Stay tuned to ITM as we continue to report on the Hocus Pocus franchise as it carries on into its second film!
