It appears that more construction work is about to get underway at Walt Disney World’s monorail resorts. Not too long after we shared the news that Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort would remain mostly closed for a Moana-themed refurbishment, we have now learned that construction of some kind is about to get underway at the Poly’s sister resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.
According to a document submitted to Orange County, Florida, the Walt Disney World Resort has submitted a “Notice of Commencement.” By submitting this permit Disney “hereby gives notice that improvement will be made to certain real property.” And that property’s address is that for the Grand Floridian.
The stated improvement is to “provide labor, material and/or electrical for construction.”
Unlike for the Polynesian, Disney has not made any declaration that they would close the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa for any construction. In fact, the mega-resort announced that the hotel would reopen to Guests on September 21, 2020, as they strive to open more than 50% of their resort hotels by the end of the fiscal year.
We at Inside the Magic have received no official word what this construction work may include. As we previously shared, the Grand Floridian was one of the hotels occupied by the NBA while the teams completed their 2019-20 season on-property at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. This construction could simply allude to needed refurbishment as Disney prepares to fully reopen the resort to Guests. It could also allude to some smaller renovations and additions like the new walkway from the Grand Floridian to the Magic Kingdom.
But, again, this is all speculation and we will not know for sure unless Disney makes any official clarification. It is also not uncommon for the resorts to be open as miscellaneous refurbishments and renovations occur at the hotel.
Regardless, we believe that any construction work being done on the Grand Floridian is only intended to make the Guest experience there a little bit more magical, and we can’t wait to see what Disney has in store for one of its most iconic resort hotels.
