VelociCoaster? Jurassic Coaster? Who even knows what to call Universal Orlando’s latest Jurassic World-themed roller coaster. Yesterday Universal Orlando Resort released a statement on their Jurassic Park section of the site and stated:
Step into Jurassic Park and stand in awe and wonder at a land transformed by science after 65 million years. But don’t be deceived by the island’s beauty because danger lurks behind every corner. Only here can you live the adventure of coming face to face with giant creatures of the Earth’s past, encounter raptors roaming every day, or take a daring raft expedition through jungles teeming with dinosaurs. For those brave enough to visit the raptor paddock, you may be able to carefully approach one of these deadly predators. Then feel the rush of the hunt as you race through the jungle alongside raptors on the Jurassic World VelociCoaster, a new species of roller coaster coming Summer 2021.

This release gave us A LOT of information! We found out that it would be called the VelociCoaster, that it was headed our way in Summer 2021, and a possible raptor escape storyline. After watching the fast progression of construction for the coaster since Universal’s Islands of Adventure reopening, getting this major news was very exciting. Fans have been calling the Jurassic themed coaster VelociCoaster for quite some time, and the confirmation alongside the opening date made the attraction feel almost that much closer to being ready to ride.

Today however, that same statement can no longer be found on the Universal Orlando site. The statement has been heavily edited and now reads:
Step into Jurassic Park and stand in awe and wonder at a land transformed by science after 65 million years. But don’t be deceived by the island’s beauty because danger lurks behind every corner. Only here can you live the adventure of coming face to face with giant creatures of the Earth’s past, encounter raptors roaming every day, or take a daring raft expedition through jungles teeming with dinosaurs. For those brave enough to visit the raptor paddock, you may be able to carefully approach one of these deadly predators.

We no longer have any mentioning of VelociCoaster as a name for this attraction and the theme parks original opening date has been erased from existence. This leads us to ask the question — what happened? It is hard to believe Universal Orlando would pre-release confidential information on their biggest new attraction since so many people are tracking it’s progress, but not impossible. Perhaps it was the opening date that Universal did not want to be held accountable to, or they wanted to add something more to the roller coaster’s name.
Whatever the reason is, it seems the Jurassic Coaster has taken a few steps back. Seemingly, given this additional update to the website, there’s a chance there has either been a name change or a delay in when we can expect the coaster to debut (or possibly both). We continue to wait for more official information to be released by Universal Orlando.
