It appears that just one month into the launch of Disney+, the streaming wars have begun with reports that Netflix has lost over 1 million subscribers to Disney+.
It’s no secret that the service is doing well since it’s November launch, gaining 10 million subscribers in just 24 hours and working up to 22 million mobile subscribers in just one month. Disney has begun its entry into the world of streaming in a very strong way.
So, where do these 1 million figures come from? A census-weighted poll conducted by Cowen & Co in the United States was conducted and suggests 5.4% of people polled stated they’ve canceled their Netflix subscriptions and joined the Mouse over at Disney+.
While it’s fair to say we are absolutely loving the content on Disney+ with The Mandalorian, The World According to Jeff Goldblum and The Imagineering Story all being fantastic, Netflix is hardly going to let Disney invade the space that they have dominated for the last few years. Just last week Netflix released The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill and it’s hard to knock the impact that shows such as The Umbrella Academy, Stranger Things and Big Mouth (to name just a few) have had.
That being said, the Disney+ formula of releasing shows on a weekly basis instead of all at once seems to be retaining subscribers, it will be interesting to see what figures look like once The Mandalorian has finished the season run and what people will stick around for.
Disney+ has a lot on the way to excite fans in the next few years with multiple Star Wars shows (including a very exciting comeback for Obi-Wan) and many Marvel projects including Loki and WandaVision.
What will be interesting to see is whether fans will keep both subscriptions going (as many of us have done here at ITM) or whether one particular platform will take a lead. We can’t discount Amazon Prime from this either!
