The Imagineering Story on Disney+ is quite literally the dream show for any Disney Parks fan and at the heart of the show is Leslie Iwerks, a producer, director, and writer who has had Disney at the very heart of her life for many years.
In fact, Leslie is the daughter of Disney Legend Don Iwerks and the granddaughter of Ub Iwerks, the animator who was responsible for co-creating Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit alongside Walt Disney himself!
We have to admit, the series so far (it will be six-parts in total) has been a fantastic insight into how our favorite parks were created. The first episode, in particular, was incredibly moving and certainly moved us to tears — no spoilers for those that haven’t seen it yet!
During an interview with Leslie Iwerks she mentions that originally the show was commissioned as a film back in 2012 where it was going to be released as a 90-minute feature-length documentary. The filming process took just over five years so by the time it came to the editing process they discovered just how much footage they had available to use, hence the series we see today!
We’ve had three episodes so far at around 60 minutes apiece so it’s safe to say that turning it into a series was a great idea!
The future of Imagineering was also discussed where Leslie had this to say:
Well, I think that’s a big question. I think that right now there’s a lot of new Imagineers coming in. I think with every new generation comes a new learning and keeping that tribal DNA, that tribal knowledge of Disney Imagineering within the company.
I think there’s no lack of excitement and inspiration about taking the current IP that was bought by Bob Iger. Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm, Star Wars, and taking the technology that we have now and just tossing the pencil to give us new experiences that we’ve never had before in the parks.
There’s no doubt a lot of footage that wasn’t used for the show, it would be great to see even more released in the future!
