At this past weekend’s D23 Expo, fans got a special sneak peek at the upcoming “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and today, Lucasfilm has finally released this new footage online and it truly is out of this world.
Fans have been waiting for new footage from this upcoming epic for quite some time as the last time we got any new looks at the movie was at Star Wars Celebration in April with the release of its teaser trailer. But today, this all changes with this D23 special look shared by the official Star Wars YouTube channel.
The new film brings an end to the nine-film saga that started back in 1977 with “A New Hope” and to commemorate its beginnings, the trailers kicks off with clips of the original cast: Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, R2-D2 and C-3PO. In the sequence, the original cast can be seen in the original film.
This continues into a series of shots from all of the other films in the generation until coming to the new trilogy and the new movie. The new footage begins with the gang approaching a desert city and then goes into a quickly-paced sequence of action-packed adventure. Some of which, includes a stormy duel at sea between Rey and Kylo, a fleet of Star Destroyers, and a new shot of Darth Vader’s helmet.
Other new footage previewed in the release includes a shot of Finn and a new character named Jannah in a cockpit (Naomi Ackie). For those not familiar, Jannah was first revealed to be a part of the new film earlier this year at Star Wars Celebration. This was also when we learned the franchise would see an all-new droid named D-0.
The footage also gave a new glimpse at Princess Leia, which was created from shots taken during the filming of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
However, the shot that really takes the intergalactic cake and may leave you questioning everything is a scene with Rey in a hooded black robe lit only by a red double-sided lightsaber, which she then unfolds and gets into fighting position with.
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” is set to hit theaters this December.
