As we reported last week, there will be a “Thor 4” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is set to be directed and written by Taika Waititi. However, it seems Chris Hemsworth might be taking a backseat in the production as Natalie Portman will be returning to the franchise to play a female Thor.
Yes–you read that right, as announced at this past weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con–Natalie Portman will be returning to the Thor franchise in its next film “Thor: Love and Thunder.” The announcement came on Saturday at Marvel’s massive Hall H Comic-Con 2019 panel.
The actress took the stage with Taika Waititi, Tessa Thompson, and Chris Hemsworth to make the announcement. During the panel, Portman hilariously shared. “I’ve always had a little hammer envy.”
The last time Jane Foster (first seen in the first “Thor” film) was seen in the MCU was in a non-speaking cameo in “Avengers: Endgame.” However, her new role in the fourth Thor film is said to be based on Jason Aaron’s comic book run that saw Foster become the Mighty Lady Thor when Thor Odinson finds himself unworthy of picking up Mjölnir (Thor’s hammer) for the first time in the rebooted Thor #1. This is when Jane steps in to be the hero, even facing off against Thor.
In addition to the news that Natalie Portman would be taking on the role of Lady Thor, San Diego Comic-Con was also where we learned that Valkyrie, (portrayed by Tessa Thompson) has officially been confirmed to be the first openly LGBTQ character in the MCU. The news came the same day and was revealed by Thompson and later confirmed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to hit theaters Nov. 5, 2021.
