Did Disney already cast Melissa McCarthy as Ursula in the upcoming live-action version of “The Little Mermaid”? With all of the remakes Disney is producing, it’s been hard to keep up with the latest developments in Disney movie news. But as of right now, McCarthy is in talks to play the sea witch in the upcoming all-new “The Little Mermaid” film, and we have to admit we’re pretty excited about it.
Variety reports that even though McCarthy and Disney have not yet sealed the deal, the actress is in early talks to play Ursula. This would mark one of McCarthy’s first family-friendly roles, so we’re eager to know whether or not the deal will go through. If you’re like us, you’ve been itching to find out more about the reimagined “The Little Mermaid” film (like who’s playing the starring role and whether or not the film is set to be a shot-for-shot remake). So finding out that McCarthy may be portraying Ursula is pretty big news. The actress is known for her roles in comedy blockbusters, and given her personality and skills, we could definitely see her playing one of our favorite Disney Villains of all time.
The only concern fans may have about McCarthy in this role is whether or not she’s up for the challenge of taking on the song “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” But if Disney could have Emma Watson (who wasn’t exactly known for her singing voice) play Belle in the live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast,” then we’re sure McCarthy has a good shot at nailing the role, even if she isn’t a singer like the role’s predecessor, Pat Carroll.
The upcoming live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” will be directed by Rob Marshall, who recently worked on “Mary Poppins Returns.” The new film will incorporate the original songs from the 1989 animated classic as well as new music by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has been lending his hand at recent Disney music and films. The film will be produced by Miranda, Marshall, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca.
