We’ve been itching to find out everything we possibly could about “Frozen 2” ever since we saw the first trailer. And now, Disney has revealed some pretty interesting information about the sequel (including what’s going on with Elsa’s ice powers the other magical elements of the story).
Disney debuted some of the scenes and story details of “Frozen 2” at the Annecy International Film Festival in France this week. The studios also revealed information about an upcoming Chip ‘n’ Dale series and “Monsters at Work,” but by the looks of it, “Frozen 2” stole the show. During the presentation about the upcoming sequel to Anna and Elsa’s hit animated film, “Frozen 2” head of animation Becky Bresee and head of effects animation Marlon West shared some pretty awesome behind-the-scenes details for the film, which is probably the most anticipated Disney sequel in years (and for sure the most anticipated film of 2019). The two told stories, shared photos, and screened two scenes that had been never-before-seen outside of The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, CA. Here’s what we’ve learned about “Frozen 2” from their presentation.
The film begins just as the first movie did: with Elsa and Anna as children. In the opening scene, the girls’ father recalls a lavish bedtime story from his boyhood days as a prince, in which he visited an enchanted elemental forest before something went horribly wrong and he was rushed home to Arendelle. Since then, the king says to Elsa and Anna, there has been a disconnect between the people of Arendelle and the four elements: air, fire, water, and earth.
In the first scene shown to Annecy International Film Festival attendees on Friday morning, Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven are playing charades. Anna starts the game and successfully acts out the word “villain,” which the rest of the players guess quickly. Olaf’s turn is next, and he says they will have a boys vs. girls round of the game. He transforms himself into a series of easily recognizable forms, all of which Kristoff guesses very quickly, and Anna accuses the two of cheating.
But everything shifts when it’s Elsa’s turn to act in charades. She becomes distracted by a haunting voice that only she can hear, and she excuses herself to her room alone.
After the scene ends, West and Bresee explained that Anna later checks on Elsa and the two sisters fall asleep watching the northern lights, before Elsa is awoken by the same mysterious voice. This is what leads to the scene we saw in the trailer, in which Elsa heads outside the palace, casts a spell like she has never done before, and causes countless rune-covered ice crystals to become suspended in the sky over Arendelle.
The second scene shown during the festival was an extended version of the scene that kicks off the official trailer, in which Elsa runs head-on into ominous, storming, crashing waves. During the scene, Elsa takes part in an intense magical battle with the horse-shaped water spirit we see in the movie. Apparently, these dark waters are the spirit’s home turf.
We’re not exactly sure what to expect in “Frozen 2,” but by the looks of it, it will be a much darker and more intense film. We can see hints at the four elements during the trailer, but not much else is explained. Just like Elsa and Anna, there is still so much about this enchanted world that we don’t know, but we are excited to find out.
