After years of speculation surrounding his future in the film industry, the first trailer for Paramount Pictures’ Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol has now been released, offering fans an official glimpse of Depp’s transformation into the legendary Ebenezer Scrooge. The footage showcases the movie’s dark, gothic atmosphere and marks Depp’s first major starring role in a large-scale Hollywood studio production since his legal battles dramatically altered the course of his career.
For Depp, the project represents far more than another adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday classic.
The actor’s relationship with Hollywood has changed dramatically over the past several years. Once regarded as one of the industry’s biggest box office draws, Depp saw his career thrown into uncertainty following his highly publicized legal disputes with ex-wife Amber Heard. The courtroom battles dominated headlines around the world, with public opinion deeply divided and every professional decision examined through the lens of controversy rather than performance.
The fallout also saw Depp exit several major franchises, including his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean series and as Gellert Grindelwald in the now-defunct Fantastic Beasts series at Warner Bros.
Since those legal proceedings concluded–which saw Depp awarded $10 million and Heard $2 million in compensatory damages–Depp has slowly begun returning to filmmaking. While many fans have championed his comeback, others remain unconvinced, making every new project one of the actor’s most closely watched in years.
That brings renewed attention to Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, directed by X filmmaker Ti West, whose darker interpretation of Dickens’ classic appears to lean heavily into gothic horror elements rather than traditional holiday sentiment.
The film has also assembled an impressive ensemble cast. Rupert Grint has joined the production as Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s loyal employee, while Daisy Ridley has signed on as Emily Cratchit
They’ll appear alongside an acclaimed lineup that includes Andrea Riseborough (Ghost of Christmas Past), Sir Ian McKellen (Jacob Marley), Tramell Tillman (Ghost of Christmas Present), Sam Claflin (Fred), Charlie Murphy, Arthur Conti (Young Ebenezer), and Ellie Bamber (Isabel Fezziwig), giving the film one of the strongest ensemble casts attached to any Dickens adaptation in recent years.
With Paramount Pictures set to release Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol on November 13, 2026, the film is shaping up to be one of the studio’s biggest prestige releases of the year.
The project is particularly significant because it marks another step in Depp’s gradual return to mainstream Hollywood after spending much of the last several years working on smaller international productions. That shift is especially notable considering Depp previously admitted he had grown comfortable living away from Hollywood.
“I just love places with character. British people are cool and will greet you as if you are a neighbor — without going over the top. I like going to places, seeing things, and meeting people — but I’m not the great extrovert that people think,” Depp said.
The actor continued: “In truth, I’m quite a shy person. That’s one of the great things about Britain, and especially Somerset. I can just be me — and that’s nice. I can go into shops without being surrounded by people wanting selfies. I don’t mind that up to a point, but sometimes it gets a little too crowded.”
The cast assembled for Ebenezer may also signal a wider shift within the industry. During and immediately after Depp’s legal battles, the actor largely remained absent from major studio productions featuring established Hollywood talent.
His recent credits include Minamata (2020), Jeanne du Barry (2023), Johnny Puff: Secret Mission (2024), and Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness (2024), which he directed and produced. He is also set to appear opposite Penélope Cruz in Day Drinker (2026).
Now, with Paramount backing Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, an A-list ensemble joining the production, and the first trailer finally giving audiences an official look at Depp’s return, many fans see the film as the clearest indication yet that Hollywood is once again embracing the actor. Even the trailer celebrated the actor’s most iconic roles, with an early tag saying, “He brought us Jack Sparrow…”

Whether that momentum eventually reaches Disney remains to be seen, but renewed industry confidence is certain to fuel ongoing speculation that Depp could one day return as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer certainly thinks so, confirming that he would love to work with Depp again and that Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is in development alongside Top Gun 3.
