For years, Walt Disney World fans have asked the same question: when will Avengers Campus finally arrive in Florida?
Disney has already brought Marvel-themed lands to multiple resorts around the world. Avengers Campus exists at Disney California Adventure, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland, giving guests the chance to step directly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, Walt Disney World remains the one major Disney destination without a true Marvel land.

That reality has often frustrated Marvel fans visiting Florida. While guests can ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT, Walt Disney World still lacks the kind of fully themed Marvel environment found elsewhere.
While Disney has made major waves with expansion, including announcements for building a Cars-themed land in Magic Kingdom, a Monsters Inc.-themed land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and a Tropical Americas land that will feature Encanto and Indiana Jones in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Marvel characters have stayed relatively quiet.
The reason has never been a lack of interest from Disney.
Instead, it comes down to a decades-old contract that continues to shape the future of theme park development in Orlando.
Why Walt Disney World Can’t Build Avengers Campus Right Now
The biggest obstacle remains Universal Orlando Resort’s Marvel agreement.
Under the terms of Universal’s licensing deal, Universal retains theme park rights to many Marvel characters east of the Mississippi River. Those rights allowed Universal to create Marvel Super Hero Island at Islands of Adventure, which opened in 1999 and continues operating today.
As long as that agreement remains in place, Disney faces significant limitations when it comes to building attractions featuring many of its most recognizable Marvel characters at Walt Disney World.
That’s why Disney has focused on characters that fall outside those restrictions. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind became possible because the Guardians were not included in Universal’s original agreement.
For guests hoping to see Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, the X-Men, and other Avengers receive a full land in Florida, the situation is considerably more complicated.
The DC Rumors That Sparked New Discussion
Late last year, speculation emerged suggesting Universal could potentially have interest in acquiring rights connected to DC if Warner Bros. Discovery ever explored such a move. It’s worth noting that Six Flags currently owns the theme park licensing rights to DC Comics.
Those rumors generated considerable discussion among theme park fans. Some even wondered whether a future DC presence at Universal could eventually replace Marvel Super Hero Island.
However, those conversations ultimately went nowhere. No credible reports have suggested a transaction is moving forward, and there is currently no indication that Universal is preparing to replace its Marvel offerings with DC properties. Of course, things could always change in the future.

That matters because some fans viewed a potential DC acquisition as one of the few realistic scenarios that could eventually lead Universal to part ways with its Marvel rights.
With those rumors effectively dead, the path toward Avengers Campus at Walt Disney World remains largely unchanged.
Why Universal Has Little Reason to Give Up Marvel
Even with Epic Universe now open, Marvel remains one of Universal Orlando’s strongest intellectual properties.
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man continues to attract guests decades after its debut. The Incredible Hulk Coaster remains one of the most recognizable attractions at Islands of Adventure, while the land itself serves as a major draw for comic book and superhero fans.
From Universal’s perspective, surrendering those rights would mean giving up a valuable asset that still generates significant guest interest.
That’s why many industry observers believe Disney would need to offer an extraordinarily attractive deal if it ever wanted Universal to relinquish its Marvel license.
Any future agreement would probably involve extensive negotiations and substantial compensation. Unless Disney sees overwhelming value in bringing Avengers Campus to Florida immediately, there may be little incentive to pursue such a costly arrangement.
Could Disney Eventually Make a Move?
Never say never.
Disney has demonstrated repeatedly that it wants Marvel to play a larger role in its theme parks. Avengers Campus continues expanding internationally, and Marvel remains one of the company’s most important brands.
The longer Marvel’s popularity remains strong, the more pressure Disney may feel to create a permanent Marvel destination at Walt Disney World.
At the same time, Universal has shown no signs that it wants to leave the superhero business behind. The company continues investing heavily across its Orlando portfolio, and Marvel Super Hero Island remains an important part of that lineup.
For now, the most realistic expectation is that the current arrangement continues.

What the Future Could Look Like
If Avengers Campus ever comes to Walt Disney World, it would likely require one of two developments.
Either Disney and Universal reach a financial agreement that makes sense for both companies, or circumstances surrounding the existing licensing agreement change dramatically in the future.
Neither appears imminent.
Still, fans continue to speculate because the demand clearly exists. A Florida version of Avengers Campus would instantly become one of the most anticipated additions in Walt Disney World history, bringing some of Disney’s biggest characters into a dedicated land for the first time.
Until then, Marvel fans visiting Walt Disney World will have to settle for experiences like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind while watching developments from afar.
The dream of Avengers Campus in Florida remains alive. It just remains complicated.
