Kings Dominion disappointed theme park fans today with the announcement of its abrupt closure.
Nestled in Doswell, Virginia, Kings Dominion opened its gates in May 1975, just weeks before Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Previously known as Paramount’s Kings Dominion, the park boasts a 1/3-scale Eiffel Tower replica, refreshing water attractions, and family rides.

Operated by Cedar Fair from 2006, Kings Dominion blends thrilling coasters with classic charm. Its lineup includes record-setters like the giga-coaster Pantherian (formerly Intimidator 305), the exhilarating Dominator floorless coaster, and nostalgic woodies such as Racer 75 and Grizzly. Today, the park is part of the larger Six Flags Entertainment Corporation since Six Flags merged with Cedar Fair in 2024.
From water adventures in Soak City to family fun in Planet Snoopy and high-flying coasters like Twisted Timbers, Kings Dominion balances adrenaline-pumping experiences with kid-friendly charm.
Today, however, the park has very little to offer guests as it announces its closure.

Kings Dominion Closes To All Guests
While Kings Dominion reopened for its 2025 season on March 29, it is officially off limits to guests today.
The theme park – which was infamously the site of a huge brawl last year – announced its closure via social media, explaining that it is currently experiencing issues with its water supply, meaning it can’t accommodate guests.
“Due to a nearby water main break that is impacting our water supply, Kings Dominion will not open today,” it said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We apologize for the inconvenience. All tickets will be valid for any operating day during the 2025 season. Please check back for updates about Sunday’s operation.”

The park has since confirmed that it will remain closed to all guests tomorrow (June 22). “We aim to reopen our gates on Monday, June 23,” it said on X. “Please check back on Monday prior to visiting for any important updates.”
Kings Dominion Isn’t the Only Theme Park Forced to Contend With Unexpected Closures
Other theme parks have faced similarly abrupt closures in recent years. Famously, Dollywood – Dolly Parton’s beloved theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee – was forced to close early to all guests in July 2024 due to a water main break. It faced another unexpected closure in December due to an Arctic blast that hit the area.

Weather is the most common cause of unexpected theme park closures. Like Dollywood, SeaWorld San Diego was also forced to close suddenly last year due to an active storm. Meanwhile, Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort have both experienced their fair share of hurricane-related closures over the years.
Earlier this year, the wildfires that burned through Southern California also forced abrupt closures for the likes of Universal Studios Hollywood and Six Flags Magic Mountain.
