On May 16, Disneyland Resort kicked off its huge 70th anniversary celebration, complete with new shows, limited-time food and beverages, special dessert parties, and, of course, a ton of amazing new merchandise.

While indulging in dishes like the Western Style Baked Potato and the Pineapple Upside Down DOLE Whip, guests can peruse the new merch, which includes things like new Loungefly bags, t-shirts, sweatshirts, tumblers, coffee mugs, and even a bedazzled train conductor hat, complete with mouse ears!

One of the most popular pieces of new merchandise actually had guests lining up before Disneyland Park even opened on May 16. The Key to Disneyland is a large key that allows guests to “unleash hidden magic in each land.”

After activating the key and unlocking each of the nine lock stations found throughout the theme park, guests head to the Mickey Topiary Finale lock station. Once they unlock the Topiary Finale, guests receive one of nine Disneyland 70th commemorative pins.

The day the Keys went on sale, guests were seen snatching up armfuls of the new merch, igniting a debate over whether they were trying to buy the Keys just to resell them, or if they were buying a lot of Keys because they wanted the pins they get at the end.

While the Keys were the most popular piece of merchandise being sold as part of the 70th anniversary celebration, the initial excitement quickly died down, and many guests said that they didn’t think the $60 price tag was worth it.

And now, we are seeing just how many people bought the Key to Disneyland simply to collect the pin and no longer want the piece of plastic taking up space in their home.

Disney insider Guy Selga recently attended the Disneyana Show, where attendees could purchase so many amazing pieces of Disney merchandise and collectibles, classic and new. While there, he saw an entire shelf full of Keys! Many of the Keys were more than half off (because they did not come with the commemorative pin).

The Disneyana Show is an annual event put on by the Disneyana Fan Club. The unofficial fan club is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to share the legacy of Walt Disney and preserve his memory. Many of Disneyana’s events are free to attend, but there is a small fee to join the club. And while it might be unofficial, it is not unnoticed, with Disney Legends like Bob Gurr attending events, including the Disneyana Show!

Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration will last more than one year, running through the summer of 2026. So you have plenty of time to get down to The Happiest Place on Earth and enjoy everything the celebration has to offer.

Theme park reservations are still required to visit both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, so make your reservations today!
