Peter Pan’s Flight has now been dealing with an extended closure in Fantasyland, with the attraction remaining unavailable as of 1:40 p.m. on September 22. The problems stretch back to September 21, when the ride went down during normal park operations and remained unavailable for the rest of the day.
Now, guests arriving in Fantasyland are finding something very different happening outside the attraction.
Rather than simply leaving the area empty while crews work on the ride, Disney has apparently introduced a little replacement activity for guests outside. A photo shared by a guest on X shows hopscotch set up near Peter Pan’s Flight.
It is certainly not a replacement for flying over London aboard a pirate ship, but it gives guests something to do in the area while one of Fantasyland’s biggest attractions remains unavailable.

More importantly, its appearance raises another question: How long is Peter Pan’s Flight actually going to be closed?
Peter Pan’s Flight remains closed at Magic Kingdom
This isn’t a planned refurbishment.
Disney still lists Peter Pan’s Flight as an operating Magic Kingdom attraction, and its official attraction page continues to display regular operating hours. Disney has not announced a refurbishment, permanent closure or major project involving the ride.
The attraction went down during the day on September 21. Ride-tracking data showed that Peter Pan’s Flight remained unavailable through the end of the operating day.
That closure has now carried into September 22.
As of 1:40 p.m., there was still no indication that Peter Pan’s Flight was preparing to reopen. Disney has also not publicly explained what caused the unexpected downtime.
That makes the hopscotch outside particularly interesting.
Cast Members will sometimes introduce small activities or entertainment when attractions experience downtime. It helps keep guests occupied and can make an unexpected closure a little less frustrating, especially for families with younger children.
Still, seeing an activity set up outside the attraction after Peter Pan’s Flight already missed significant operating time the previous day isn’t exactly the sign guests hoping for a quick reopening wanted to see.
It could simply be something Cast Members are doing while they wait for the attraction to come back online. It does not confirm that Peter Pan’s Flight will remain closed for any particular amount of time.
For now, though, guests shouldn’t count on riding it until Disney actually brings it back online.
This is still one of Magic Kingdom’s biggest classics
Any extended Peter Pan’s Flight closure gets attention because this isn’t just another Fantasyland attraction.
Peter Pan’s Flight is one of the rides most closely associated with the classic Disney dark ride experience. Guests board suspended pirate ships before flying over London and traveling through Never Land, encountering Peter Pan, Captain Hook and other familiar characters along the way.
The attraction draws inspiration from Disney’s animated Peter Pan (1953), and the concept dates all the way back to Disneyland’s opening year in 1955.
Magic Kingdom’s version has become a Fantasyland staple in its own right.
Despite its age, Peter Pan’s Flight regularly attracts substantial crowds. Its relatively low capacity can also help push standby waits higher, making an unexpected closure noticeable elsewhere around Fantasyland.
That is particularly true when the attraction remains unavailable for an extended period rather than experiencing a brief technical delay.
Disney already made a controversial Peter Pan change
The current closure also comes a couple of years after Disney made a notable change inside Peter Pan’s Flight.
In 2024, Disney temporarily closed the attraction and updated its Native American scene.
The previous scene had faced criticism over its stereotypical depiction of Native American characters. Disney ultimately replaced portions of the scene while keeping Tiger Lily and introducing new characters.
The decision generated plenty of discussion among Disney fans.
Some welcomed the update and believed Disney could retain the attraction while changing elements that had aged poorly. Others argued that Disney should preserve its classic attractions as closely as possible to their earlier versions.
That debate was part of a much larger conversation happening around Magic Kingdom as Disney updates, replaces and reimagines attractions throughout the park.
Peter Pan’s Flight survived that project and reopened.
This latest closure, however, does not appear connected to another announced reimagining.
What about those Peter Pan replacement rumors?
That distinction is important because rumors surrounding Peter Pan’s Flight have circulated among Disney fans for years.
With Magic Kingdom undergoing enormous changes, it isn’t difficult to understand why fans might immediately wonder whether an unexpected multi-day closure means something bigger is happening.
Disney has permanently removed several longstanding Magic Kingdom experiences in recent years, while other classic attractions have received substantial updates. That has naturally created more attention around the future of rides such as Peter Pan’s Flight.
There have also been online rumors and speculation suggesting that Peter Pan’s Flight could eventually be replaced or substantially changed.
At this point, however, there is no reason to connect those rumors to what is happening this week.
Disney has not announced that Peter Pan’s Flight is permanently closing. It has not announced a replacement attraction for the location. The company’s own website continues to present Peter Pan’s Flight as an active Magic Kingdom attraction.
In other words, this should be treated as an unexpected operational closure unless Disney says otherwise.
The length of that closure is the bigger mystery.
Fantasyland loses a major attraction for a second day
Peter Pan’s Flight going down for a few hours isn’t necessarily unusual. Theme park attractions experience unexpected downtime for countless reasons, ranging from technical problems to operational issues.
Two days of disruption begins to attract more attention.
The attraction was unavailable for a significant portion of September 21 and never returned before the park closed. Guests came back September 22 only to find the ride still unavailable into the afternoon.
Disney has not provided a reopening time.
That means anyone visiting Magic Kingdom should keep an eye on the My Disney Experience app rather than building their Fantasyland plans around Peter Pan’s Flight.
The hopscotch outside may provide a little fun while guests pass through the area, but it also makes for an unusual scene.
Instead of families pouring into the queue for one of Magic Kingdom’s most recognizable dark rides, guests are finding an attraction that remains unexpectedly closed and a simple game sitting outside.
For the moment, there is no evidence that anything more dramatic is happening behind the scenes.
Peter Pan’s Flight isn’t being permanently removed based on anything Disney has announced, and the current closure shouldn’t be treated as confirmation of the replacement rumors that have circulated online.
Still, the longer the attraction remains closed without an explanation, the more attention the situation will receive.
As of 1:40 p.m. on September 22, Peter Pan’s Flight remains unavailable. Until Disney gets the pirate ships flying again, hopscotch may be about as close as guests can get to an adventure outside the attraction.
