Big Top Souvenirs has remained closed since February while Disney worked on refurbishing the Storybook Circus merchandise location. Since then, guests have walked past construction walls and scrim with little indication of when the colorful shop would return. Now, however, one of the biggest visual changes yet has arrived, giving visitors fresh reason to believe the reopening may not be too far away.
Disney still hasn’t announced an official reopening date, but the latest construction progress makes it clear that work is moving into its final stages. For fans of Storybook Circus, it’s an encouraging update after nearly six months without one of Fantasyland’s most recognizable shopping destinations.
Big Top Souvenirs Is Finally Looking Like Itself Again
Construction began at Big Top Souvenirs earlier this year as Disney started a major exterior refurbishment of the circus-themed building. Since February, the attraction’s signature tent has been surrounded by construction walls while crews worked on restoring the colorful exterior that has become one of the defining landmarks of Storybook Circus.
This week, guests noticed one of the most significant milestones yet.
The striped scrim covering the store’s iconic entrance marquee has been removed, revealing the familiar Big Top Souvenirs sign once again. The sign appears freshly painted, giving it a bright, refreshed look that fits the whimsical style of the surrounding land. While protective plastic still covers portions of the illuminated “Souvenirs” lettering, seeing the sign uncovered is an exciting development.
Much of the construction scrim remains around the tent itself, but Disney previously completed work on the building’s new roof earlier this summer. With more of the finished exterior now becoming visible, the project appears to be inching closer toward completion.
Although Disney hasn’t confirmed exactly how much work remains, uncovering the entrance sign is often one of the last noticeable steps before a refurbishment wraps up.
Could It Reopen Before Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party?
Naturally, the latest update has many Disney fans wondering whether Big Top Souvenirs could reopen just in time for one of Magic Kingdom’s biggest events of the year.
The first Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party of the season begins on August 7, only a couple of days away. Storybook Circus sees plenty of foot traffic during the after-hours event, with guests traveling between Fantasyland attractions while collecting candy, meeting characters, and enjoying exclusive entertainment.
Having Big Top Souvenirs open again would certainly be a welcome addition.
The shop offers another air-conditioned stop during what can still be very hot August evenings, and its confectionery section gives guests another place to grab sweets while exploring the park. It also provides additional shopping capacity during one of Magic Kingdom’s busiest special-event seasons.
Still, expectations should probably remain tempered.
Disney has yet to announce a reopening date, and visible construction continues throughout the building. Portions of the sign remain protected, while scrim still surrounds much of the tent structure. Although the project appears much closer to completion than it did just a few weeks ago, it’s impossible to say whether everything will be finished before party guests begin arriving on August 7.
A Favorite Stop in Storybook Circus
For many guests, Big Top Souvenirs is more than just another gift shop.
The colorful circus tent fits perfectly into the playful atmosphere of Storybook Circus, sitting near Dumbo the Flying Elephant and serving as one of the area’s visual centerpieces. Inside, guests can browse Disney merchandise ranging from plush and toys to pins, apparel, and souvenirs while also stopping by the confectionery counter for snacks and sweet treats.
Its closure has been especially noticeable because of its location in one of Fantasyland’s busiest family areas. Parents often stop inside while children enjoy nearby attractions, making it one of the more convenient shopping locations in the park.
Once it reopens, the shop will restore another familiar piece of Storybook Circus that guests have been missing throughout much of 2026.
Construction Continues Across Magic Kingdom
While Big Top Souvenirs appears to be nearing the finish line, it represents just one of several major construction projects currently transforming Magic Kingdom.
Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress recently closed for what is expected to be one of the attraction’s most significant refurbishments in years. Disney plans to update the show’s timeline, refresh several scenes, and introduce changes throughout the classic attraction before it welcomes guests back.
Frontierland also remains the center of Disney’s largest ongoing expansion efforts. The former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island have now given way to construction on Piston Peak National Park, an entirely new themed area that will dramatically reshape this section of the park. Beyond that project, Disney has also announced plans to build Disney Villains Land as another major expansion in the same general area.
Not every construction project involves something entirely new. Earlier this year, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened after its own extensive refurbishment, giving guests an updated version of one of Magic Kingdom’s most beloved roller coasters.
Elsewhere, work appears to be wrapping up around the exterior of Haunted Mansion as crews finish improvements surrounding the classic attraction.
Meanwhile, rumors continue to circulate that Space Mountain could eventually undergo a lengthy refurbishment of its own. Disney has not confirmed those reports, however, so for now the iconic Tomorrowland attraction continues operating as usual.
With so many projects happening across Magic Kingdom, Disney is clearly investing heavily in the park’s future. Before those larger expansions are complete, though, Big Top Souvenirs looks ready to become one of the first familiar locations to return, giving Fantasyland another classic experience back for guests to enjoy.
