Big Thunder Mountain Is Closed Again
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad spent more than a year undergoing a major refurbishment after closing on January 6, 2025.
When it finally reopened on May 3, 2026, guests were introduced to an updated version of the classic attraction. Disney had replaced portions of the track, refreshed several scenes, and made changes to the attraction’s effects and theming. The refurbishment also brought an updated Rainbow Caverns sequence and other enhancements to the ride. Most notably for families, the minimum height requirement was lowered to 38 inches.
The attraction’s return was a major milestone for Magic Kingdom, particularly because guests could once again ride through one of the few remaining pieces of the original Frontierland experience while construction continued elsewhere in the land.
On August 25, 2026, Big Thunder Mountain suddenly became unavailable during the afternoon. The attraction remained closed as guests prepared for that evening’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Disney subsequently displayed a message through the My Disney Experience app apologizing for the unexpected closure and informing guests that cast members were working to return the attraction to operation.
“On behalf of the entire team at Magic Kingdom, I’d like to apologize that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently unavailable. Our Cast Members are working diligently to get this attraction up and running again,” the notification read, per Kenny the Pirate. “We are sorry you are not able to experience this attraction at this time. I hope you will enjoy some of our other attractions during your experience in the park today.”
As of August 26, Big Thunder Mountain remained listed as “temporarily unavailable.” For guests visiting Magic Kingdom, that means the safest approach is to check the My Disney Experience app before heading toward Frontierland rather than assuming the attraction will be operating.
Frontierland Is in the Middle of a Massive Transformation
The latest Big Thunder Mountain closure is happening against the backdrop of a much larger story.
Frontierland is being transformed as Disney builds Piston Peak National Park, a massive new Cars-themed expansion that will permanently change this section of Magic Kingdom. The project is replacing the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island area, both of which permanently closed in July 2025.
For longtime Magic Kingdom guests, this has been one of the most dramatic changes the park has experienced in decades. The new Piston Peak National Park is not being designed as a traditional Cars Land. Instead, Disney is taking Pixar’s characters and placing them inside a Rocky Mountain-inspired national park. That means the landscape will feature towering mountains, waterfalls, rivers, trails, and geysers, with the architecture drawing inspiration from America’s national parks.
Disney is also creating a new visitor lodge and Ranger HQ to help establish the land as an actual destination within the story of Magic Kingdom. Two major attractions are planned for the expansion.
The headliner, Cars-themed Ridge Run Rally, will send guests racing through the wilderness in an off-road adventure. The attraction will travel through mountainous terrain and a geyser field, with the ride designed to feel substantially different from the existing Cars Land at Disney California Adventure. The second attraction will feature Miss Fritter from 2017’s Cars 3 and is being designed as a more family-friendly experience.
Beyond Big Thunder will be the new Villains Land, which is also currently under construction.
Frontier Trading Company Also Hit by Trouble
The changes have not been limited to construction. Just days ago, guests encountered another unexpected closure in Frontierland when Frontier Trading Company was forced to shut down because of flooding.
The western-themed merchandise location closed on August 24 after reportedly taking on several inches of water overnight on August 23. The closure continued through August 25.
For guests looking for western-themed merchandise or a place to participate in pin trading, the unexpected shutdown meant another Frontierland location was temporarily unavailable. However, Frontier Trading Company reopened to guests on August 26 following the cleanup.
A Very Different Frontierland Awaits
There was a time when a visit to Frontierland meant wandering along the Rivers of America, exploring Tom Sawyer Island, watching the Liberty Square Riverboat pass by, and then climbing aboard Big Thunder Mountain. But in a few years, that landscape will be vastly different, and guests will encounter an entirely new take on the Wild West.
