Credit: gardener41, FlickrD23 2026 is officially here, and with it comes an abundance of new information regarding the Walt Disney World Resort, specifically the historic changes coming to its flagship park, Magic Kingdom.
Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland has undergone one of the most significant transformations in the park’s history, as Disney Experiences moved forward with a reimagining that brings the spirit of the Cars franchise into Walt Disney World.
The new area, Piston Peak National Park, draws inspiration from the Cars universe and includes a visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, forest trails, and more, all built in “Parkitecture,” the National Park Service-inspired architectural style designed to blend structures into their natural surroundings. Imagineers used the approach to make the new buildings feel as though they’ve always belonged among the mountains and trees.
The expansion will add two new attractions: a high-speed journey through mountainous terrain and a family-friendly ride for all ages, marking the first dedicated Cars-themed land at Walt Disney World. Towering mountains and geysers immerse guests in the rally’s twisting trails, while a tree line separates the new land from neighboring Liberty Square and the remaining sections of Frontierland.
The changes came at a cost. Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, two Frontierland staples for decades, closed permanently on July 7, 2025, to make way for the project. The Rivers of America had opened with the park on October 1, 1971, carrying vessels like the Liberty Belle Riverboat past attractions including Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Tom Sawyer Island, which opened May 20, 1973, had offered guests a rare hands-on, independently explorable space within the park.
The closures drew significant backlash from fans, some of it eased by updated concept art, though many guests remained frustrated by the shift toward IP-driven theming over the immersive, low-key charm the island and river offered.
Then-Disney Experiences Chairman and current Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro addressed the thematic connection in a previous Horizons showcase at D23 2024: “The American West has always been about keeping your eyes on the horizon … believing in yourself, carving your own path, and striving toward success. That goes for miners in the mountains, bears from the country, a princess from the bayou … or a racecar from the big city.”
Disney maintained sightlines to keep the rest of Frontierland distinct from the Cars-themed automobiles. Construction on the broader project — which Disney has called the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history — began immediately following the closures. Villains Land, positioned beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, forms part of the same expansion, which is expected to bring four new attractions to the park in total.
Now, two years on, Disney has officially unveiled the entire Piston Peak National Park at D23 2026. Ahead of the highly anticipated Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris on Saturday, August 15, Disney allowed D23 attendees to view a plethora of theme park models that reveal many of the updates coming to parks around the world.
From looks inside the Encanto attraction coming to the Tropical Americas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom to Space Mountain: Earthrise launching in Tokyo Disneyland next year, Disney Experiences laid it all on the table. One huge confirmation came with the Piston Peak National Park setpiece.
Among the new attractions is an off-road rally racer, with ride vehicles boasting distinct personalities as they tear around the perimeter of Piston Peak. Guests waiting in line will meet an all-new original character: Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, a clever homage to Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore, the forest ranger who appeared in Disney cartoons throughout the 1950s.
For months, Disney kept the second attraction under wraps, revealing only that it would skew younger and offer family-friendly fun. That mystery has now been solved — the ride will star Miss Fritter, the mud-splattered, undefeated demolition derby champion and school bus from 2017’s Cars 3, voiced by Lea DeLaria. Miss Fritter terrorizes her opponents at the Thunder Hollow Speedway, and it sounds like Imagineers are bringing that same chaotic energy to Magic Kingdom.
The addition seemingly gives Walt Disney World its own answer to Cars Quatre Roues Rallye, the family-style dark ride that’s been a staple at Disney Adventure World (formerly Walt Disney Studios Park) in Disneyland Paris since 2007.
The arrival of Piston Peak National Park and the upcoming Villains Land mark the biggest change and expansion in Magic Kingdom’s five-decade-long history. As Disney tries to balance innovation with nostalgia, will the updates made across the Walt Disney World Resort be able to satisfy the destination’s millions of fans? Only time will tell.
More is expected to be revealed this weekend at this year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California. The convention takes place at the Honda Center from August 14 through August 16, with some panels–including the Horizons: Disney Experience Showcase–being streamed at home on Disney+ and Hulu.
