For 14 years, every Avengers movie has followed the same marketing blueprint. Marvel spread the spotlight across its biggest heroes while making the villain one of the trailer’s biggest attractions. Loki, Ultron, and Thanos all dominated previews for their respective films, reminding audiences exactly who the Avengers would have to defeat.
The newly released Avengers: Doomsday trailer changes that formula entirely.
Rather than building its marketing around Doctor Doom, Marvel has shifted the emotional weight onto Thor. It’s a surprising creative decision that rewrites one of the MCU’s longest-running traditions and could reveal far more about the movie’s direction than fans initially realized.

Thor Finally Becomes the Face of an Avengers Movie
Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has been part of the MCU since Thor (2011). He’s appeared in every Avengers film, became the franchise’s first hero to headline four solo movies, and remains one of the few original Avengers still active after the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Despite all of that history, Marvel had never built an Avengers trailer around him.
That changes with Avengers: Doomsday.
From the opening moments, Thor serves as the emotional centerpiece of the trailer. His voice carries much of the footage, delivering an inspiring speech that frames the stakes facing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Rather than simply appearing alongside the ensemble, he functions as the trailer’s narrator and emotional anchor.
Doomsday arrives December 18th.

Marvel also gives Thor some of the preview’s biggest moments, including a dramatic confrontation with Doctor Doom that immediately establishes just how dangerous the new villain will be.
It’s a level of focus the character has never received in an Avengers marketing campaign.
Doctor Doom Isn’t the Main Attraction
Perhaps the trailer’s biggest surprise isn’t what it shows—it’s what it chooses to hold back.
Doctor Doom is clearly the central antagonist of Avengers: Doomsday, but Marvel resists making him the face of the trailer.
That’s a sharp contrast from previous Avengers films.
The Avengers (2012) leaned heavily on Loki throughout its marketing campaign.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) made Ultron’s eerie dialogue one of its defining features.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) constantly reminded audiences that Thanos was the franchise’s greatest threat.
With Doomsday, Marvel takes a different approach.
Doctor Doom appears, speaks, and delivers one unforgettable display of power, but the studio intentionally avoids revealing too much about Robert Downey Jr.’s take on the iconic villain.
That restraint makes Doom feel even more mysterious while allowing the heroes—not the villain—to drive the trailer.
The Avengers Are Fighting Each Other
Another noticeable change comes from the action itself.
Previous Avengers trailers focused on heroes assembling against a common enemy. Even when conflicts existed within the team, marketing emphasized unity and teamwork.
The Doomsday trailer flips that idea on its head.
Much of the footage features Marvel heroes battling one another instead of Doctor Doom. It’s an unusual choice, but one that makes sense given the film’s massive roster of characters arriving from different corners of the Marvel multiverse.
Many of these heroes have never met before.
Instead of immediately joining forces, they appear to clash first, creating battles fans have never seen on the big screen while avoiding spoilers for the movie’s biggest confrontations with Doom.
It’s another way Marvel breaks away from a formula that has defined every Avengers movie since 2012.

Marvel’s Biggest Crossover Yet
The trailer also confirms just how ambitious Avengers: Doomsday really is.
For the first time in MCU history, characters from Fox’s X-Men universe will stand alongside Marvel Studios’ heroes in an Avengers film.
Familiar faces including Professor X, Magneto, Mystique, and Cyclops all appear, signaling that Marvel is finally embracing a crossover fans have wanted for years.
That alone separates Doomsday from every previous Avengers movie.
Instead of introducing another team-up within the MCU, Marvel is bringing together multiple generations of comic book franchises that once existed in completely separate cinematic universes.
The result feels less like another sequel and more like the beginning of a new chapter for Marvel storytelling.
Why Thor Matters More Than Ever
Marvel rarely changes a successful formula without a reason.
Thor has quietly become the longest-serving active Avenger. Iron Man sacrificed himself. Steve Rogers retired. Natasha Romanoff is gone. Clint Barton has largely stepped away, and Bruce Banner appears far less frequently than he once did.
Thor is the last original Avenger whose story has continued uninterrupted across the Infinity Saga and the Multiverse Saga.
Giving him the emotional spotlight suggests Avengers: Doomsday may serve as a defining chapter for the God of Thunder, much the way Avengers: Endgame revolved around Iron Man and Captain America.
Whether that ultimately proves true won’t be known until the film arrives, but Marvel has already revealed one thing through its marketing.
For the first time in 14 years, an Avengers trailer isn’t defined by its villain. Instead, it’s driven by one hero whose journey has quietly become the backbone of the MCU. That’s a major shift for Marvel Studios, and it may be the clearest indication yet that Avengers: Doomsday is preparing to reshape the franchise in more ways than one.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
