Flags at Walt Disney World Resort were seen flying at half-staff yesterday, following an order issued by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the wake of the assassination of Christian conservative public figure Charlie Kirk.
“I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida immediately until sunset on Sunday, September 14, 2025,” the official directive stated.

Is This Tribute for Charlie?
While Florida has a long-standing tradition of lowering flags in honor of fallen public figures, the timing of this order coincides with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Social media users quickly noted the dual significance, with one fan writing: “It’s both. Our commander in chief ordered it for all flags, so it happened and should remain at half staff through at least Sunday.”

At Walt Disney World, the sight of flags at half-staff drew attention from guests and online communities, with some interpreting the gesture as a direct tribute to Kirk’s passing in addition to the annual 9/11 memorial. Others noted that the state-mandated protocol ensures all flags on government and state-affiliated property adhere to the directive, regardless of location.
Much Remains Unclear…
It remains unclear if private entities within the resort, such as hotels and attractions, will continue to fly their flags at half-staff through sunset today, in line with the governor’s order. Disney has not released an official statement on the matter.
The use of flags as a public symbol of mourning has a long history in the United States, often signifying respect for those who have passed or as a mark of national remembrance. In this case, Florida’s directive ensures that both the legacy of Charlie Kirk and the solemnity of the 9/11 anniversary are visibly acknowledged across the state.

It should be noted that while he was alive, Charlie Kirk was a controversial and divisive figure, which has led some to believe Disney would not go as far as to lower their flag for him for the weekend. As of now, no mention of his passing has been released by the company.
As the weekend progresses, attention will remain on whether the flags at key locations, including Walt Disney World Resort, will continue to remain lowered until sunset as instructed.
