For fifty years, Good Morning America has been one of the country’s most trusted and popular news programs. Anchors like Charlie Gibson, Diane Sawyer, Joan Lunden, Spencer Christian, and Sam Champion have become household names. The show is currently hosted by Robin Roberts, Lara Spencer, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan. The daily morning show is so popular that it has had several spinoffs over the years, including Good Afternoon America, Good Night America, GMA Wake Up Call, and GMA3: What You Need to Know.

In 2018, GMA3: What You Need to Know launched as GMA Day, and was soon renamed GMA3: Strahan and Sara, hosted by Michael Strahan and Sara Haines. In 2020, the show was suspended, and the show became Pandemic: What You Need to Know, keeping viewers informed about the latest information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pandemic was hosted by veteran anchor Amy Robach, who was soon joined by T.J. Holmes. While Holmes and Robach were only supposed to be temporary replacements, fans loved their chemistry. As the intensity of the pandemic died down, Pandemic: What You Need to Know became GMA3: What You Need to Know , and Holmes and Robach continued to anchor.

In late 2022, Holmes and Robach made headlines when it was revealed that they were in a relationship, but they were both married to other people at the time. They were suspended from GMA3 pending an investigation, and in early 2023, ABC News announced that the pair had been fired. Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes were replaced with well-liked anchors DeMarco Morgan and Eva Pilgrim.

Unfortunately, GMA3 has been on shaky ground for a while. Reports indicated that Morgan and Pilgrim were struggling to connect with viewers and obtain the same kind of ratings as Robach and Holmes.

Earlier this year, we reported that ABC News was considering a shake-up at GMA3, and that Morgan and Pilgrim could be gone by summer. Well, summer is here, but it looks like the two anchors decided to act before ABC could.

On June 13, viewers were surprised to see that DeMarco Morgan was not on air, and he has not been on air in the weeks following. Then, on July 7, it was announced that Eva Pilgrim would be leaving GMA3 in the fall to become the host of Inside Edition. Ms. Pilgrim is taking over for Deborah Norville, who is retiring after 30 years.

Just one day later, ABC News president Almin Karamehmedovic sent a staff memo, letting them know that Morgan was also moving on from the show.

Per The Hollywood Reporter:

ABC News president Almin Karamehmedovic told staff Monday that DeMarco Morgan, the co-host of the show, “has decided to begin a new journey and will be departing ABC News,” according to a memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

“His devotion to journalism and sharing with others is evident in everything he touches,” Karamehmedovic added. “We thank him for his kindness and many contributions, wish him well, and look forward to celebrating his next chapter soon.”

ABC News has been in the process of rebooting the Good Morning America franchise for a while, and the show is currently undergoing a big move. The morning show has been at its Times Square studio for decades, but will now be located at the new Robert A. Iger building a few miles away.

In March, nearly 200 employees were laid off, many of them from ABC News, around 6% of the workforce. A number of high-level executives were let go, and multiple shows were moved under one leader. During these layoffs, most of the staff from GMA3 were let go, and the production team from Good Morning America took over.

ABC News has not yet announced who will be taking over for Mr. Morgan and Ms. Pilgrim.

Are you disappointed that Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan will not be hosting GMA3: What You Need to Know anymore? Who would you like to see replace them? Do you think the show needs a big shake-up?
