Central Florida is experiencing a rare cold snap, bringing with it weather conditions that have prompted Universal Orlando Resort to temporarily close its water park, Volcano Bay. The park is set to reopen on January 24, 2024, but until then, guests will need to adjust their plans as temperatures remain unseasonably chilly.

Central Florida’s Unusual Cold Front

After a rainy weekend, the weather took a dramatic turn with temperatures plunging into the 30s and 40s overnight. Freeze warnings were issued across several counties, with wind chills dipping into the 20s. Monday morning brought cold but dry conditions, with high temperatures struggling to reach the mid-50s.

The forecast for the week indicates continued cold weather, with rain expected to move into the region by Tuesday morning and linger through Wednesday. Northern Florida could even see freezing rain, ice, or snow—an extremely rare occurrence for the Sunshine State.

Although Central Florida isn’t expected to experience wintry precipitation, residents and visitors should prepare for a soggy and frigid couple of days.

By Thursday, rain coverage will begin to diminish, and sunshine is expected to return by the weekend. However, temperatures will remain cool before a gradual warm-up begins.

Volcano Bay, Universal Orlando’s tropical-themed water park, is known for its thrilling attractions and serene island vibes. The park features Krakatau, a 200-foot-tall volcano centerpiece that lights up with fiery lava effects at night. However, the immersive water park experience is highly dependent on warm weather, making it particularly vulnerable to Central Florida’s current cold spell.

Universal confirmed the decision to close Volcano Bay through January 24 due to the inclement weather. This closure follows a series of similar shutdowns in early December, when a strong cold front led to a six-day closure of the park.

Cold Weather Affects Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon

The cold snap has also impacted operations at Walt Disney World’s water parks. Blizzard Beach, themed around a “melting ski resort,” is closed for January 20 and 21, with a tentative reopening planned for January 22. However, with temperatures forecast to remain low throughout the week, this reopening date could be extended.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, meanwhile, remains closed for its seasonal refurbishment, leaving water park enthusiasts with limited options during this chilly period.

Cold weather impacts aren’t confined to water parks. Attractions across Disney World and Universal Studios may experience disruptions, particularly outdoor rides and shows that pause operations if temperatures drop too low. Evening fireworks shows may also feel less comfortable for guests braving the cooler air.

What Guests Can Do During the Closures

While Volcano Bay and Blizzard Beach remain closed, guests visiting Universal Orlando can still enjoy Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and CityWalk, which offer a range of indoor and outdoor attractions unaffected by the weather. Universal’s upcoming park, Epic Universe, set to open later this year, will also provide a new array of experiences for guests.

For Disney fans, indoor attractions, dining experiences, and resort activities offer alternatives for staying warm during the cold snap. Shows like The Festival of the Lion King and indoor rides like Pirates of the Caribbean provide respite from the chill.

Despite the temporary setbacks caused by weather and other challenges, Central Florida’s theme parks remain a destination where visitors can find excitement and escape—albeit with an extra layer of preparation during these cold and contentious times.
