After a December littered with theme park shutdowns across Central Florida, another bout of closures has hit the Sunshine State.
Universal’s Volcano Bay Water Theme Park is an immersive tropical oasis that combines cutting-edge attractions with the charm of an island getaway. Centered around Krakatau, a towering 200-foot volcano that comes alive with cascading waterfalls by day and fiery lava effects at night, the park offers a blend of thrills and relaxation.
However, Universal’s Volcano Bay Water Theme Park will be unavailable to all guests on Thursday, December 12, 2024. The resort confirmed that inclement weather has caused the park to shut down. Posting to X (formerly Twitter), Universal Orlando Resort (@UniversalORL) let guests know the park would be shuttered.

The closure comes after Volcano Bay was shut multiple times in early December, including a consecutive six-day shutdown caused by a cold front barreling through Central Florida. The closure today coincides with Walt Disney World Resort’s closure of Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park.
“Behind the front, a cold airmass will settle in early Thursday morning, bringing temperatures down into the low to mid-40s across most of the area,” Click Orlando wrote earlier this week. “Some of the colder spots will be north and west of I-4.”
“Although winds will die down overnight, there will be enough of a breeze to bring wind chill values into the 30s across most of the area,” the report continued.
Universal’s Volcano Bay Water Theme Park and Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park are scheduled to reopen tomorrow, December 13, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. At the former, guests with early park admission can enter Volcano Bay from 9:30 a.m.
When operational, guests visiting Universal’s Volcano Bay can enjoy a variety of innovative attractions, from water slides like the Ko’okiri Body Plunge to serene rivers perfect for a leisurely float. The park’s TapuTapu wearable technology eliminates the need for long lines, enhancing the sense of escape. With Polynesian-inspired dining options and pristine beaches, Volcano Bay redefines the water park experience, offering something magical for every type of adventurer.
