It is perhaps an understatement to say that the last 72 hours have been extremely tumultuous for American politics. After weeks of criticism, President Joe Biden announced that he was no longer running for re-election in November. He released a statement saying, “While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

President Biden endorsed Kamala Harris for the 47th President, ending heated speculation as to who would become the frontrunner for the party nominee at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month. Harris’s campaign says that it has received over $100 million in donations since Sunday evening from “more than 888,000 grassroots donors contributed in that 24-hour span, and for 60% of them, it was their first contribution of the 2024 election cycle.”

Now, Vice President Harris can include Abigail Disney, the granddaughter of Roy Disney and grandniece of the iconic Walt, among them (per Variety). According to the New York Times, the Disney scion texted reporter Kenneth Vogel, “I am supporting her with all my heart.”

Abigail Disney is a major donor to the Democratic Party, so her endorsement is a significant boost for Kamala Harris on her path to the DNC. Disney is well-known for her criticism of her family’s company and has called for significant taxation of the ultra-wealthy, in addition to her support of workers’ rights.

Although The Walt Disney Company has largely attempted to remain apolitical (at least publicly), it has recently been branded as “the most woke company” in America and has frequently been targeted as part of a “liberal media agenda” by former President Donald Trump and other notable Republicans, like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Trump advisor Stephen Miller.

Walt Disney himself was a Democrat in his earlier life and later switched to the Republican party, becoming a staunch anti-communist voice in the entertainment industry. That said, the Republican part of 2024 is objectively much different from that of the 1940s when Walt was most vocal in national politics.

VP Kamala Harris is currently receiving numerous endorsements from media figures like Abigail Disney and Netflix co-founder and executive chairman Reed Hastings (who posted on social media, “Congrats to Kamala Harris — now it is time to win”), as well as major figures in the Democratic Party.
