The next Star Wars project to hit Disney+ will take inspiration from a surprising source.

While the past few years have been quiet on the theatrical front for Star Wars, the franchise’s presence on Disney+ continues to grow. Fresh off a successful string of shows such as The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the next series to debut on the streaming service is The Acolyte, which will premiere on June 4, 2024.

Set towards the end of the High Republic era, roughly 100 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), this is said to follow Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) investigating a series of crimes that reunite him with his former Padawan-turned-warrior Mae (Amandla Stenberg).

Aside from this concept, Disney and Lucasfilm have revealed very little about what to expect from The Acolyte. Its creator, Lesyle Headland, has teased that this is a Star Wars project that was specifically not made for Star Wars fans.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Leslye Headland explained that while the series features cameos from deep Star Wars lore, you don’t need prior knowledge to appreciate the show. “You could definitely watch this series without knowing anything about Star Wars, but if you are a Star Wars fan, you will notice all of the things that we’ve put in there,” she said.

Perhaps the most interesting hint at the show’s tone comes from a comment Headland made in her very first pitch to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. Again speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in March, Headland noted that she framed the show as a combination of Kill Bill (2003) and Frozen (2013).

The latter has been one of Disney’s biggest cash cows for the past decade, with audiences of all ages obsessing over the tale of two sisters torn apart – then later reunited – over the eldest’s powers. While we surely can’t expect a dupe of Anna and Elsa to feature in The Acolyte, it’s interesting to speculate on what exactly it will borrow from the animated movie.

On Reddit, fans have theorized that its similarity to Frozen will rest on the fact that “the ‘Acolyte’ is clearly simply misunderstood and called evil, isn’t really evil and is instead out for revenge against the real villain of the show.”

Just as Elsa struggles to get to grips with her power, another Reddit user thinks The Acolyte will see its lead (most probably Amandla Stenberg’s Mae) overwhelmed by their abilities. “I’m going to guess that The Acolyte has force powers but can’t control them/wasn’t trained to use them,” they wrote.

“A group of people (maybe even Jedi) decide to off them because they’re dangerous. They fail and now The Acolyte is going on a revenge mission to take those people out .” Should this be the case, that revenge aspect is likely where the film’s Kill Bill influence comes into play.

While we’ll need to wait until June 4 to see just how Frozen has inspired the series, there’s one element we’re pretty sure The Acolyte hasn’t borrowed from the animation: the music. (Although personally, we’d love to see one Reddit’s theory of a rousing rendition of “Do you want to build a death star?” come to life).
