The Walt Disney Company is preparing to have a banner year in 2024, with several highly anticipated films on the way. This summer, fans will see the continuation of Marvel’s Deadpool franchise in Deadpool & Wolverinewhich sees Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool team up with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

The film acts as the third installment of the Deadpool series and marks a shift for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as a whole. Neither the previous two Deadpool films were considered “canon” to the MCU, instead offering fans an offshoot storyline where Deadpool could roam free.

Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox provided the company with an even larger collection of franchises, brands, and characters, with Disney gaining control of everyone’s favorite red anti-hero.

Pixar will also release the sequel to the smash-hit Inside Out (2016) this summer, continuing the story of Riley and her emotions as she faces adulthood. Inside Out 2 has already broken records for both Disney and Pixar and appears to be shaping up to be a massive film for both companies.

However, few Disney films are as interesting or as exciting as Moana 2.

In a surprise announcement earlier this year, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed a direct sequel to 2016’s Moana was on the way. Disney had already announced a live-action version of Moana was in the works as well, but Moana 2‘s reveal came entirely out of left field.

Originally, Disney was developing a Disney+ series based on Moana that would continue the franchise through streaming. However, as the project continued, plans changed, with Disney announcing the planned series was being transformed into its own feature-length film. Both Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho will be returning for Moana 2.

What was even more surprising was Moana 2’s release date. During the announcement, Bob Iger revealed Moana 2 would be hitting theaters later the same year. The film is slated to release worldwide on November 27, 2024, meaning fans only need to wait a few more months.

Ahead of this release date, a teaser trailer will be unveiled on May 29, 2024, giving fans a more detailed look at the upcoming film.

Neither audiences nor Disney itself could have guessed how successful the original Moana film would be upon its original release in 2016. Moana grossed over $687 million worldwide, receiving rave reviews along the way.

According to data from The New York TimesMoana was the most streamed movie of 2023, not just on Disney+ but on any streaming service, indicating Disney will be holding this franchise tight for the foreseeable future.
