What started as the beloved magic of Disney crossing over with the realms of Square’s (Square Enix at the time) Final Fantasy series launched an immortal gaming legacy, but could it have also sparked a film adaptation?

Kingdom Hearts was one of the most ambitious and unexpected crossover projects in the gaming world in 2002. Years later, the original title has spawned an extensive, multi-entry franchise spanning across different genres with one of the biggest followings in the gaming industry. With multiple core games and spinoffs, there’s only one place for Sora, Donald, Goofy, and King Mickey to go.

A recent development has suggested that the series is currently being taken in a “new direction,” as comments from a “reliable insider” surfaced on social media. A report from The Gamer shared the post below from Daniel Richtman/@DanielRPK that claimed Disney was currently working on a new adaptation of the Kingdom Hearts saga.

Kingdom Hearts Movie or Show Rumored at Disney

For those not in the know, the Kingdom Hearts series is what happens when Disney Animation decides to try its hand at a JRPG. In a multiverse-spanning plot, Sora is whisked away from his home world as he embarks on a quest involving Keyblades, Heartless, Nobodies, and a slew of classic Disney characters. That descriptor barely scratches the surface, but a film or Disney+ adaptation might be just the thing to clear things up.

The Gamer’s George Foster shared the following statement in their coverage of the rumor.

“Yesterday, DanielRPK (who recently suggested that a sequel to Sonic Frontiers was in development, something that was then backed up by another insider) shared a post on their Patreon that reported that an adaptation of Kingdom Hearts is currently being worked on by Disney. They aren’t sure if it’s a series or a movie, but it does seem like something is being worked on.”

The report went on to add,

“Interestingly enough, this isn’t actually the first time that we’ve heard about Disney making some kind of TV series or movie adaptation of Kingdom Hearts. All the way back in 2020, Vulcan Reporter’s Emre Kaya suggested that a Kingdom Hearts series for Disney+ was being developed and that Square Enix was asked to make a pilot using Unreal Engine.”

The idea of a pilot made with the Unreal Engine might put a few potential viewers off, as it might bear too close of a resemblance to the cutscenes in the video games, but that doesn’t mean the idea doesn’t have good bones. Lightning might strike twice if Disney does indeed go through with it.

It Just Might Work

Kingdom Hearts didn’t just bring Final Fantasy and Disney together; it brought together a whole host of Disney’s veteran voice actors to reprise their roles as these classic characters, many of whom are still working today. Not only that, but it would be one of the biggest gatherings of Disney characters since Once Upon a Studio (2023).

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have a merry Christmas, but the idea of a Kingdom Hearts movie or TV show would be just as ambitious and eye-catching as the original release over twenty years ago. Whether or not Disney or Square will pursue the idea remains to be seen, but to say it wouldn’t be a success would be untrue.
