Currently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) finds itself in Phase Five, embarking on the second installment of the post-Avengers: Endgame narrative known as the Multiverse Saga. Under The Walt Disney Company’s umbrella, Marvel Studios is actively diversifying its storytelling scope by introducing a plethora of superhero teams beyond the central Avengers lineup.

During the San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Kevin Feige unveiled plans for the MCU to introduce specialized teams geared towards addressing a wide range of threats, encompassing challenges on cosmic, supernatural, and street levels.

Leading the charge in broadening superhero tales on Earth are Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil, who have been designated as the key figures for the street-level division of the MCU.

Marvel Studios is tasked with reintroducing the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen to today’s MCU audience, given the character’s absence since the conclusion of the Netflix Marvel Daredevil series in 2015. The series, based on Frank Miller’s comic book hero of the same name, was abruptly halted in 2018 following the announcement of Disney+ (Disney Plus).

Now, an exciting first look at the much-anticipated Punisher/Frank Castle — Netflix-era actor Jon Bernthal — has surfaced.

Netflix Daredevil and Punisher Alum First Look Revealed

The upcoming Marvel TV series, Daredevil: Born Again, is set to explore the complexities of villains, vigilantes, and moral ambiguity — drawing inspiration from Daredevil’s rogues’ gallery in Marvel Comics. The show will introduce new adversaries while also reintroducing familiar characters. Notably, Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye/Benjamin Poindexter, also known as Dex, will make a comeback, joining Jon Bernthal’s Punisher/Frank Castle, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil/Matt Murdock, and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin/Wilson Fisk in this fresh, new narrative arc.

The infamous antihero Frank Castle AKA the Punisher, will see his highly anticipated return in an expectedly violent fashion. It’s no wonder that actor Bernthal has been spotted in New York City — sporting a rather bruised and bloody mug.

Daredevil Updates (via littlepandapit on Instagram) shared the pic of Bernthal in his Punisher get-up, bloody knuckles and all, pointing at the camera. Adding some interesting context, the account posted to X (formerly Twitter):

The fact that Bernthal and the surrounding actors all appear to be sporting makeup mimicking blood and dirt is rather telling — audiences can expect something decidedly 18+ in the upcoming film — more likely putting it in line with the Daredevil continuation that fans of the series have been hoping for (and worried about not getting).

Why Are Fans Worried About Daredevil: Born Again?

Initially, fans voiced disappointment over the direction of the Daredevil sequel, particularly concerning casting decisions such as Sandrine Holt stepping in for Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Fisk, deemed unnecessary. Additionally, the absence of Matt Murdock’s trusted allies and legal associates, Karen Page (portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (played by Elden Henson), further fueled fan dissatisfaction.

Amid growing fan concerns and the lukewarm reception of recent Marvel Studios’ endeavors, Feige made the decision to scrap the initial half-season content for Born Again entirely, deeming it not aligned with the studio’s vision. Consequently, all writers and creatives associated with the project were let go, and a completely new creative team was assembled.

The upcoming Marvel television series is presently in production in New York City, helmed by the filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, known for their work on projects like Moon Knight and Loki. Philip Silvera, renowned for his stunt coordination in the iconic “hallway fight” scene from the original Netflix series, has been enlisted for this project, joining other familiar talents from the Netflix show.

All of this hopes to align the new show with the former Netflix offering — making it a bit of a spiritual “Season 4”.
