At the latest Super Bowl LVIII, Marvel Studios made a big reveal: the long-anticipated third movie in the Deadpool series, previously known as Deadpool 3, will now go by the name Deadpool & Wolverine. Directed by Shawn Levy, recognized for his work on Deadpool 2, this new entry into the Deadpool saga will become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after The Walt Disney Company’s takeover of 20th Century Fox, now rebranded as 20th Century Studios.

Ryan Reynolds, acclaimed for his depiction of Deadpool/Wade Wilson (self-dubbed “Marvel Jesus”), teamed up with his “frenemy” Hugh Jackman, renowned for his portrayal of Wolverine/Logan in the Fox X-Men Universe. Together, they first disclosed that the Deadpool series would continue, smoothly integrating into Disney’s MCU under the guidance of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

Moving from the self-contained Fox X-Men Universe to the expansive MCU, currently in its Multiverse Saga phase, Marvel is now set to devise a strategy for integrating the mutant-centric X-Men universe into the storyline of the third Deadpool movie.

The inclusion of X-Men in the central MCU storyline confirms Marvel Studios’ intent to reintegrate the X-Men franchise into their Disney-affiliated lineup. This includes a focused effort on consolidating Marvel’s television offerings, such as the continuation of the beloved narrative from X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997) with X-Men ’97 on Disney+ (Disney Plus).

Based on new reports and Disney and Marvel’s upcoming Captain America 4, AKA Captain America: Brave New World teaser at the recent CinemaCon, the road appears to be being paved for a certain fan-favorite X-Men to take the stage in place of the “old guard” of mutants.

Will Daniel Radcliffe Be Marvel Studios’ New Wolverine?

Eric Voss of New Rockstars has revealed that the Captain America: Brave New World first look teaser trailer footage from CinemaCon indicates key clues to the introduction of Wolverine into the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and astute fans seem to have cracked the code.

Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus Ross, AKA Thunderbolt Ross (taking over from the late William Hurt), now set to be President of the United States and also likely the Red Hulk, appears to be congratulating the new Captain America, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, for retrieving the “discovery of the millennium… stolen from a Japanese mining site”.

Voss makes it clear that Ross is likely referencing the fictional super-strong metal Adamantium, which is linked to the likely introduction of Wolverine in the MCU—who fans think might actually be Daniel Radcliffe.

Tied to this exciting reveal is one of the most significant rumored recasts for the role of Wolverine/Logan/James Howlett.

Daniel Radcliffe, known for his role in the Harry Potter series, caught attention in TBS’ recent season of Miracle Workers, displaying a notably muscular physique. Fans swiftly speculated about a possible cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. Similarly, Taron Egerton, renowned for his work in the Kingsman film franchise, has been suggested as a potential variant of Logan due to his similarly short and muscular stature, although he has personally denied the rumors.

Now, fans have begun piecing together this teaser trailer news from Marvel and Disney themselves and are “connecting the dots” to Radcliffe’s likely future involvement. Reddit user u/KostisPat257 has strung together Marvel’s (and Kevin Feige’s) clues, referencing how the new plan for Brave New World, seemingly sans the Serpent Society, will still most likely revolve around Adamantium and Harrison Ford’s President Ross.

Adamantium is predominantly tied to the mutants and X-Men in the Marvel Comics, and the same metal fused into Wolverine’s skeleton in both the Marvel comic book world and the Fox films. With international politics and the fact that Japan is tied to the discovery of Adamantium (and Wolverine’s origin story), the connections are definitely there:

Connecting the dots, it seems the Serpent Society steal Adamantium from Japan for the Leader, but Sam, Joaquin and Isaiah intercept them at an airport and steal back the Adamantium, which leads to them being publicly congratulated by the POTUS, probably at a UN meeting with other world leaders.

That’s when the eerie, brainwashing music plays in the speakers which turns Isaiah Bradley and some Secret Service agents against the president, as also seen in the CinemaCon footage.

A couple more thoughts:

With Japan being the first to actually have Adamantium metal in their possession, it seems pretty clear to me that they’re setting up Kenji Oyama researching the metal and creating the Adamantium-bonding process which gives Wolverine his Adamantium skeleton. Yuriko Oyama, Kenji’s daughter, becomes Lady Deathstrike, one of Logan’s main enemies.

I’m really curious to see who they’re gonna replace the Serpent Society with, since the Adamantium retrieval mission seems essential to the plot and can’t just be cut altogether.

User u/eroticpangolin added to the discussion, stating that this would be the perfect way for Marvel to introduce Radcliffe as a younger Wolverine directly into the MCU:

Can you imagine if all the rumors that Daniel Radcliffe was a young version of wolverine in deadpool and wolverine actually turned out to be true, but he is in this instead, And actually is the new wolverine. I’m not suggesting it’s at all true. But it would be funny if it was.

It’s more than likely that all of this will go down in order to prep audiences for Avengers 5 (formerly Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) and Avengers 6 AKA Avengers: Secret Wars, rumored to bring Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man/Tony Stark back for one last ride and end the Multiverse Saga, as well as make way for the X-Men MCU era, potentially titled the Mutant Saga.

A lineup of X-Men characters rumored to make appearances in Deadpool & Wolverine includes Halle Berry reprising her role as Ororo Munroe/Storm, Famke Janssen returning as Dr. Jean Grey, James Marsden revisiting his portrayal of Scott Summers/Cyclops, and the beloved Patrick Stewart returning as the iconic Professor Charles Xavier/Professor X, joined by Ian McKellen reprising his role as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto.
