Star Wars favorite man in metal and a certain little blue troublemaker from outer space teaming up sounds like a crossover event worthy of a Deadpool movie, but the realm of animation is actually making that a reality as Pedro Pascal and Stitch voice actor and creator Chris Sanders unite for The Wild Robot (2024). Sanders himself shared the official teaser in the footage below.

Directed by Sanders and brought to life by an absolute onslaught of animation talent, trailer presents a gorgeously animated tale of a robot lost in presumably the wilds of earth, possibly a different take on Wall-E’s formula with a splash of The Iron Giant thrown in for good measure. Although the trailer is still fresh on socials, odds are definitely stacked in its favor as it culminates elements of what Polygon describes as a mashup of all our favorite robot movies.

An adaptation of the Peter Brown novel of the same name, the film is an animated sci-fi adventure film that tells the story of a lost robot learning to survive in an unforgiving landscape. Having already earned his stripes on emotional adventures like the How to Train Your Dragon series, this definitely feels like a project worthy of Sanders’ wheelhouse.

The official summary from DreamWorks Animation Studios reads as follows,

“The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot — ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.”

While that might be easily dismissed as standard emotionally-driven sci-fi fare at first glance, the talent behind The Wild Robot is packed to the rafters with familiar faces that will have potential viewers chomping at the bit to see this movie.

Along with the Mandalorian himself, Pedro Pascal, the cast is led by Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther (2018)) as the titular robot, along with other award winning performers such as Bill Nighy, Kitt Connor, Stephanie Hsu and even voice acting legends like Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames.

Even with that much in mind, the film has a pedigree for success that many animation buffs (this writer included) will be watching like a hawk until the movie finally premieres. The Wild Robot hits theaters September 20, 2024, and fans of Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks animation won’t want to miss this journey into another world with a pack of unlikely friends.
