The Walt Disney Company was built on the foundations of animated fairytales and fantasies. For the past century, the studio has stood on the shoulders of Disney princess characters and heroines, and much of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ success is owed to its adaptations of Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty.

As much as the studio has done to bring these classic tales to life in the animation and art department, much is still owed to the phenomenal acting talent that gives each character a voice. For Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, that honor goes to the enchanting Mary Costa who originated the role of Princess Aurora in 1959.

Sleeping Beauty Speaks

Official letter from Mary Costa

The official statement reads,

I lovingly ask you all to kindly refrain from sending any fan mail. I have been informed that there was recently an influx of mail which only continues to build, possibly due to my nearing 94th birthday or new attention around my working connection to Leonard Bernstein.

I would like to reiterate the previous statements I’ve released in 2014 and 2020: in this season of my life, I am simply unable to accommodate the volume of incoming correspondence that is still being sent.

Over the course of my career, it has been a great joy to be able to connect with each and every one of you. The impact of the letters, photographs, and personal stories I’ve been privileged enough to experience has constituted a golden zenith of my professional and personal life, and I continue to carry its collective embrace in my heart. It is because of this care I have for all of you that I kindly implore you not to send anything.

I am alive and well- and plan to continue on in this way. However, I can’t overextend myself and no longer have a designated mailbox for fan mail. The thought of your heartfelt and generous mail being lost deeply pains me. If anything is received, a third party will either donate it to a charity or dispatch it. Also, please note that any autographs you see online were likely done prior to my previous announcements.

I trust you will all understand this in the spirit in which it is intended and will honor my wishes. I appreciate your heartfelt support, and receive- and reciprocate- your loving enthusiasm. I continue to observe you all in the highest regard and humbly thank you for the happiness you impart upon me.

With infinite gratitude and love- from your Princess Aurora,

Mary

Like many iconic performers who made Walt Disney’s original productions wonderful, Costa’s tremendous talents have exceeded far beyond the studio, and her connection to her public is just as enchanting and lovely as Princess Aurora herself. Although the actress and singer can no longer overextend herself, her love for her support network of viewers everywhere is nothing short of magical.
