After more than a decade of stalled development, a new Tron movie is finally on its way, and Disney has revealed the first look at the sci-fi reboot.

If the Walt Disney Company has ever produced a great cult science-fiction franchise, it would have to be Tron, the series that kicked off with the 1982 movie of the same name. Although the original film, which starred Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and British acting legend David Warner, was a moderate commercial success at the time, it has become an integral part of pop culture because of its groundbreaking use of computer animation and distinctive, neon-framed aesthetic.
In the original, a rogue computer programmer named Kevin Flynn (Bridges) attempts to hack into his old company’s files to find evidence that he created massively popular games, only to find himself digitally transported to a strange world of anthropomorphic computer programs and gladiatorial games.

Disney has attempted to capture the odd energy of the original for decades now. A sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010, and though it grossed $400 million at the box office, the company could not seem to capitalize on its success. At least until now. At long last, Tron: Ares seems to be finally happening, with Jared Leto starring as the sub-titular character alongside Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.

Reportedly, the film will be a direct sequel to Tron: Legacy and is rumored to involve Jared Leto as a computer program who manages to escape his digital world and enter the real world in an inversion of the plot of the original film. While Tron: Ares may technically be a follow-up to Legacy, it also appears that no actors from the previous movies will appear (though archival footage is a possibility), making it a de facto reboot for the franchise.
Disney has released a peek at the film, which appears to be promotional art, likely featuring Jared Leto. Check it out:

While this image does not give us a lot of information as to what might actually be happening in Tron: Ares, it does drop one clue. Assuming that this does show Jared Leto, it is notable that his body armor (and surroundings) are lit with the distinctive red glow that the original used as shorthand to indicate a program was allied with the fascistic Master Control Program.

This lends some credence to rumors that Jared Leto’s character initially starts the film as one of the traditional “bad guys” of the franchise and develops a sense of morality as a program. We’ll have to wait for more information about the film as it comes, but we’re already excited.
Tron: Ares will be directed by Joachim Rønning and is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2025.
